The Prince George's County Police Department is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Media Relations Manager (Administrative Specialist 3G) grade G33 position, in the Media Relations Division.

About the Position

This is a senior level professional Manager position. Incumbent is responsible for overseeing marketing, public relations, and media relations of the Department. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for determining marketing strategies, ensuring communications with the news media, providing crisis media management, handling formal communications from the Assistant Chief of Police and overseeing the managers of other units within the Media Relations Division. This work is evaluated based on adequacy, accuracy and timeliness.

  • Oversees all matters concerning the department's relation to the news media.
  • Gathers and releases information to the public and the news media.
  • Utilizes news media, editorial and audio/visual techniques.
  • Directs the operation of the Media Relations Division.
  • Appraises the needs of all segments of the news media, both regional and local.
  • Works in partnership with citizens to assist in finding resolutions to immediate community problems.
  • Serves as spokesperson for the department on any newsworthy matters, appearing on radio, television and in person, and as a spokesperson to be quoted in the newspapers.
  • Speaks for the Chief of Police or Deputy Chiefs, when not available, on matters of departmental policy.
  • Oversees the activities of the Crime Solvers Program and the police department's Special Projects Office.
  • Oversees the activities of the department's graphic artist.
  • Ensures news releases and press statements are written on all matters requiring sensitive public relations using knowledge or skill in dealing with sensitive public relations matters.
  • Serves as the department's liaison for all state legislative affairs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications listed below to be eligible for additional consideration:

  • Masters Degree from an accredited College or University in Journalism, Communications, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in journalism, practical communications or experience as a reporter, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory capacity.

Any equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience may also be considered.

Please note there is no equivalency for the required supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Highly eligible candidates must meet all of the preferred qualifications listed below for further consideration:

  • Familiarity with social media platforms.
  • Experience as a reporter.
  • Ten (10) years or more of Public Relations experience and practices.
  • Ten (10) years or more of management/supervisory level experience.
  • Ten (10) years or more of spokesperson experience.
  • Expert communication skills, orally, in writing and speaking in public.
  • Extensive knowledge of program development, implementation, and management techniques.
  • Ability to coordinate and/or manage a diverse range of assignments, while being receptive to the needs of the entire Department.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with county officials, employee groups, and employee associations; interacts with community, resident and faith-based organizations.
  • Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with the Police Department, news media and the citizens of Prince George's County.

General Plan Information:

The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.

A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.

Children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage under the health benefit plans. This includes stepchildren and children of the same-sex spouse.
