Medical Assistant / New Patient Coordinator
Suburban Endocrinology and Diabetes Center is seeking a compassionate, organized, detail-oriented, and motivated Medical Assistant / New Patient Coordinator to join our growing team.
Important About This Position
This is not solely a Patient Coordinator position. The individual hired for this role will be expected to perform the full range of Medical Assistant duties, in addition to serving as a New Patient Coordinator. The ideal candidate should be comfortable balancing direct patient care, clinical and administrative Medical Assistant responsibilities, prior authorizations, patient communication, and new-patient coordination.
Position Summary / Responsibilities
As a Medical Assistant, responsibilities will include:
- Process prescription refill requests.
- Complete medication and procedure prior authorizations.
- Answer incoming patient phone calls and return patient messages promptly.
- Coordinate and order laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures as directed by providers.
- Educate and train patients on Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) devices.
- Administer injections as directed by providers ( if needed)
- Accurately document patient information in the electronic medical record (EPIC experience preferred).
- Coordinate with pharmacies, laboratories, insurance companies, and other healthcare providers.
- Perform other Medical Assistant duties as assigned based on the needs of the providers and practice.
In addition to regular Medical Assistant duties, this position will also serve as a New Patient Coordinator, including:
- Coordinate and prepare new patients for their initial consultation.
- Verify insurance eligibility and coverage.
- Review the patient's diagnosis, reason for referral, and scheduling needs.
- Ensure the patient is appropriately scheduled with our practice.
- Obtain all pertinent medical records, laboratory results, imaging reports, referral documentation, and other records needed for the consultation.
- Contact patients, referring physicians, hospitals, and other medical offices when additional information or records are needed.
- Review new-patient information before the appointment to help ensure required documentation is available for the provider.
- Follow up on missing records, referrals, insurance information, or other requirements before the patient's consultation.
Qualifications
- Medical Assistant certification preferred, or equivalent clinical experience.
- Previous experience working as a Medical Assistant in a physician's office or clinical setting preferred.
- Previous endocrinology, diabetes, primary care, or specialty-practice experience is a plus.
- EPIC Electronic Medical Record experience preferred.
- Experience with insurance verification, prior authorizations, referrals, and medical records strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of diabetes management, insulin therapy, and CGM devices is an advantage; training can be provided.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to manage both clinical MA responsibilities and administrative/patient coordination responsibilities.
