POSITION: Medical Assistant

LOCATION: 1640 Skyview Drive, Bruceton Mills, WV 26525

HOURS: Monday – Friday, between the hours of 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, (not to exceed 40 hours per week)

QUALIFICATIONS:

Serious applicants should provide not only a resume but also support documents such as license, diplomas and/or certificates to support the employee’s stated qualifications.

  • Must possess valid certification/licensure as a medical assistant from an accredited institute/program.  Examples of such certifications include:
  • Have valid certification/licensure to practice in the state of West Virginia as a medical assistant.  The individual must possess proof of their current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration.
  • Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
  • Preferred qualifications and experience include:
    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
    • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
    • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
  • Experience in providing healthcare in a correctional setting (preferred)
  • Additional professional education and certifications (preferred)

DUTIES:

  • Provide medical assistant services commensurate with community standards which include, but are not limited to:
  • Assisting health care providers in examining or treating patients.
  • Taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by health care providers.
  • Providing interpretation of technical information.
  • Performing procedures within the scope of practice to include sterile dressing application and packing, enemas, suture/staple application and removal and applying orthopedic splints as prescribed by a provider.
  • Assisting providers in performing minor surgical procedures including, but not limited to, biopsy, laceration repair, and small lump excisions.
  • Completion of routine treatments as prescribed including, but not limited to, electrocardiograms, peak flow measurements, point of care blood glucose testing, point of care urinalysis testing, and lab specimen collection, including through venipuncture.
  • Assisting the physician, mid-level provider, nurse, or other staff with patient flow in a clinic setting by measuring the patient’s vital signs and weight and scanning laboratory results into the Bureau Electronic Medical Record (BEMR) system.
  • Accomplishing all procedures within standard infection control protocols.
  • Assisting in patient dismissal from the clinic upon completion of treatment as well as ensuring follow up care instructions are understood.
  • Maintaining equipment through normal procedures including cleaning and sterilizing as well as minor troubleshooting or repairs.  Any defective equipment should be properly reported for corrective action to be taken.
  • Properly storing and maintaining adequate levels of supplies in assigned rooms. If, at any time, the incumbent notices any supplies running low in the supply room, he/she immediately notifies the person responsible so that supplies can be reordered.
  • Ensuring instruments and unapproved items are not left in the clinic during non-patient care hours and that proper storage and security procedures are adhered to, as instructed.
  • Assisting in audits and reviews of records.
  • Completing a wide array of clerical and support duties including utilization of institutional-specific computer programs such as SENTRY.
  • Acquiring and maintaining knowledge of the Health Services Manual and unit procedures necessary to accomplish the mission described herein.
  • Providing services may require a significant amount of physical exertion, including but not limited to, walking, bending, and periods of standing lasting for two to three hours at a time.
