Primary Objective

As a Medical Assistant, you will play a crucial role in providing high-quality healthcare services to our diverse patient population. Your commitment to patient care, clinical expertise, and leadership will contribute to our mission of improving the health and well-being of the community we serve.

Essential Functions

  • Perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to support the delivery of patient-centered care.
  • Assist healthcare providers with patient examinations, treatments, and procedures.
  • Obtain and record patient medical history, vital signs, and other relevant information accurately.
  • Prepare examination rooms, ensuring cleanliness and organization.
  • Administer injections and medications as directed by healthcare providers.
  • Perform basic laboratory tests, including blood draws and specimen collection, and prepare samples for testing.
  • Assist in patient education, ensuring patients understand their conditions, treatments, and medications.
  • Coordinate patient referrals, appointments, and follow-up care as needed.
  • Maintain electronic health records (EHR) and document patient information accurately and confidentially.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety protocols to ensure a safe healthcare environment.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare team members to provide comprehensive and coordinated care.
  • Support the mission and values of the community health center and actively participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with training and mentoring other medical assistants.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Front Desk Duties

  • Manage patient appointments, scheduling procedures, and follow-up visits using electronic health records (EHR) scheduling software.
  • Verify patient insurance coverage, obtain pre-authorizations, and process insurance claims accurately.
  • Greet patients warmly upon arrival, ensuring a positive and welcoming experience at both locations.
  • Answer phone calls promptly, address patient inquiries, and relay messages to physicians as needed.
  • Handle patient registration, including demographic data entry and updating patient records in electronic health records (EHR).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and clinical procedures.
  • Proficient in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and basic computer skills.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to communicate professionally (verbally and written).
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to present a pleasant, professional demeanor and image.
  • Mathematical aptitude.
  • Ability to show empathy to distressed individuals and assist with identifying solutions to problems identified.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and independently.
  • Attention to detail for accurate data management.
  • Sensitivity to cultural diversity and an understanding of community needs.
  • Knowledge of healthcare, social services, or grant-funded programs is a plus.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certified or registered medical assistant (CMA/RMA) designation preferred.
  • Phlebotomy experience required.
  • 3+ years of experience in primary care, outpatient, or family medicine setting preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Proficiency in Electronic Clinical Works (ECW) software preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or listen.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms to assist patients and/or clinic staff.
  • Occasionally assists with moving wheelchair bound patients, clinical equipment, and office supplies up to 35 pounds.
