Position: Medical Assistant 1 0-2 Years Experience

FLSA: Non-Exempt

General Summary of Duties: To serve the patient by providing quality care, compassion and commitment to service to include communication of all care to be given; to give assistance to the Provider as directed; and to represent the practice in a professional manner at all times.

Reporting Structure: Reports directly to the Practice Director

Back Office:

  • Greet patient and introduce yourself then escort to exam room
  • Confirm full name and date of birth, explain procedures and address questions for current visit
  • Obtain and document patient's vital information (weight, height, blood pressure, pulse, BMI, temperature and respiration (infants: head circumference) and pulse ox.
  • Open EMR to patient's name and pull protocols that are due
  • Document in EMR patient's reason for visit
  • Verify patient medication list against those listed in the EMR and update as per Practice Policy
  • Perform and document all ancillary services as ordered by the Provider per Practice Policy
  • Enter orders for all services performed by the medical assistant
  • Assist Provider with routine procedures
  • Accompany provider for sensitive' procedures or exams
  • Respond to flags in EMR
  • Clean exam rooms in between patients
  • Monitor stock in exam rooms daily and restock as needed
  • Check expiration dates on medications and vaccinations
  • Prepare medical supply order requests and vaccine supply requests and provide to Practice Director
  • Maintain oxygen tanks.
  • Maintain emergency log that eye wash, O2, fire extinguishers are checked on a weekly basis.
  • Assist other office staff when available
  • Monitor refrigeration temperature. Record in Logbook.
  • Sterilize all instruments including autoclave. Maintain sterilization logs
  • Clean and spore test the sterilization unit according to Practice Policy
  • Calibrate and maintain equipment per manufacturer's recommendations and Practice Policy
  • Report any malfunctions of equipment to Practice Director
  • Replace light bulbs in otoscopes and lamps. Check batteries in all equipment and exam rooms.
  • Prepare blood specimen and all lab specimens for pick-up by courier service and document
  • Follow all clinical quality measures and preventative protocols per patient's age, gender and identified disease state and report to provider the measures due at time of visit
  • Dispose of contaminated material in accordance with OSHA policy
  • Always follow Universal Precautions
  • Promptly report to Practice Director any incidents of exposure
  • Follow Practice Exposure Control Plan
  • Complete all mandated training sessions as required on an annual basis
  • Perform other duties requested by Practice Director or Provider
  • Follow HIPAA regulations
  • Prepare biohazard for pick up and in exam rooms.
  • Clear RX refill box and enter RX refills per Practice Policy and send to appropriate provider
  • Completes mandated trainings as required on an annual basis

Diabetic Foot Exam

  • Have patient remove shoes/socks
  • Perform diabetic foot exam per Practice Policy
  • Document in EMR
  • Provide patient with Diabetic information and review self-management goals with patient and educate
  • Document using EMR Diabetic Maintenance Management screen

Injections (Allergy, Flu, Immunizations, Pneumonia)

  • Verify drug and dosage ordered in EMR
  • Communicate and confirm the ordered drug(s) to be given with the patient
  • Administer per recommended guidelines

Instrument Sterilization

  • Perform per manufacturer's recommended guidelines

Pap Smear

  • Assist Provider to obtain specimen
  • Label and prepare specimen for courier pick-up

Phlebotomy:

  • Perform specimen draw in accordance with Genesis Laboratory Policy of no more than two (2) attempts to draw and then get another phlebotomist or physician to draw unless patient requests an additional attempt
  • Label specimens in accordance with Genesis Laboratory guidelines (full name and DOB)
  • Enter test requests from lab requisition, translating into computer order codes for each reference laboratory with appropriate diagnosis
  • Produce specimen bar-coded labels for non-scheduled blood draws
  • Perform manual checks to review and reconcile computer discrepancies
  • Maintain log and reconcile received results against drawn labs
  • Monitor and maintain ample laboratory supplies
  • Monitor blood/urine refrigerator temperatures to ensure stability of the specimen and log in accordance with Laboratory procedures
  • Communicate problems to the Practice Director for resolution
  • Communicate with Laboratory personnel regarding laboratory information system and specimen issues
  • Organize laboratory results and requisitions
  • Follow manufacturer's users and performance instructions for equipment
  • Follow maintenance schedule and maintain log of values
  • Complete all mandated training sessions on an annual basis
  • Annual recertification of Blood-Borne Pathogens Training
  • Knowledge of lab text - proper tubes (Refer to Harvest under 'Details' for any questions regarding proper colored tubes to use)
  • Send Lab manifest to lab daily

Skin Tag Removal

  • Confirm that patient does not have a pacemaker or defibrillator; if they do, notify the Provider
  • Reinforce post-removal instructions

Suturing & Wound Care

  • Assist provider with performing wound care or perform basic wound care within the Medical Assistant scope of practice
  • Order in EMR and document as per office policy

Throat Culture

  • Swab throat per Practice Policy
  • Perform analysis

12-Lead EKG:

  • Position patient for procedure and apply electrodes according to the diagram
  • Test results imputed to Electronic Medical Record (EMR) or printed
  • Dispose of used electrodes according to Practice Policy

Urine Specimen

  • Collect specimen from patient
  • Process according to test ordered
  • If ordered specimen is to be sent out, prepare the specimen for the courier

Vision Screen

  • Obtain history of eyeglasses/contacts
  • Patient to stand at marked off distance from eye chart
  • Perform eye testing, each eye individually
  • Record data in EMR

Flu Swab

  • Obtain specimen
  • Run test
  • Place order in centricity and result it
  • Notify Provider of Result

Annual Wellness

  • Complete EKG (welcome to Medicare)
  • Complete Mini mental status exam and clock test

Holter Monitors

  • Confirm Patient Name and DOB and order
  • Place Holter Monitor
  • Educate Patient on Use
  • Make sure the order is in Centricity
  • Clean returned Holter monitors

Maintain log of Holter monitors out with patients and that they are returned
