POSITION PURPOSE:

  • Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Medical Assistant Lab Trainer is responsible for facilitating patient care activities and flow, and for providing direct patient care. Responsible for thorough and accurate patient documentation, and for performing as a contributing member of the health care team.
  • In addition to Medical Assistant responsibilities, the Medical Assistant Lab Trainer serves as the primary contact and responsible staff member for point of care testing/phlebotomy training and compliance.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education & Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED; College degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience as a medical assistant at CHC; one full year preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology, clinical tasks, and skills.
  • Knowledge of point of care equipment including maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with various phlebotomy techniques.
  • Understanding of specimen processing and handling requirements.
  • Ability to be highly accurate, maintain professional poise, and calm demeanor in stressful situations.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs and priorities.
  • Ability to work independently, to solve problems creatively, and to take initiative in improving care.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to adhere to work schedule in a punctual and reliable manner and willingness to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to read, proofread, document, edit and format using word processor and Electronic Health Record.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computer, phone, fax, printer, and scanner and the ability to access, retrieve and utilize information in standard four drawer files and cabinets on a regular basis which requires frequent bending and squatting to access drawers.
  • Licensure, Certification or Other Requirements:
  • CPR/Basic Life Support Certification within 30 days of employment.
  • Reliable transportation between CHC sites.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • In addition to Medical Assistant responsibilities:
  • Serves as primary contact and liaison for all site point of care (POC) testing.
  • Performs and/or supports monthly QC testing at all sites.
  • Coordinates phlebotomy and POC training.
  • Reviews POC and phlebotomy resources and workflows and provides recommendations for updates.
  • Performs quality audits (reviews logs, lot numbers, etc.) and notifies supervisor of any identified issues.
  • Supports compliance with CLIA requirements.
  • Adheres to safety requirements and assists in the identification and prevention of hazardous conditions.
  • Coordinates with the Nursing Education Team to reinforce skills learned in orientation and provide additional training and coaching to support skill development and ongoing competency.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • All other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed in a health care environment. Exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous substances, test materials common to a health care setting and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
  • Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Frequent walking, sitting, bending, and standing required for extended periods of time.
  • Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.
  • Lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds.
