Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant (MA) reports to the Center/Clinic Administrator and provides routine patient care within his/her level of training and functions under the direction/guidance of the clinical supervisor and/or the physician in accordance with relevant state statutes. The Medical Assistant has a duty to provide a standard of care that meets or exceeds that of a reasonably competent and knowledgeable Medical Assistant.

The MA organizes the clinical environment and provides support in patient care situations. Support includes but is not limited to assisting physicians and nursing personnel, including those skills listed under Essential Functions below, along with various other procedures under the direct supervision and responsibility of a medical provider.  The MA assists in identifying patient needs or problems and communicating data to the provider or other members of the clinical team.  The MA delivers quality customer service. Ensures policy and procedures are followed including infection control, privacy and confidentiality. Completes mandatory training.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Required:

o  High school graduate, GED or equivalent.

o Current, nationally recognized Medical Assistant certification, or the ability to obtain the certification within 180 days of employment. Medical Assistants who are hired prior to receiving their certification are expected to perform at the same level as a “certified” Medical Assistant.

o Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare providers (AHA) or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (American Red Cross), or ability to obtain such within 30 days of employment.

Preferred:

o   At least one (1) year of experience as a Medical Assistant.

o   Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

o  Ability to evaluate patient needs, administer prescribed medications, assist physician with examinations and treatment, prepare and apply dressings, and instruct patients in health measures and self-care as instructed by the physician.

o   Knowledge of medical terminology required.

o   Ability to document and report findings and observations.

o   Ability to perform EKGs.

o   Ability to provide on-site emergency treatment within scope of practice.

o   Ability to complete a color blindness test.

o   Strong phlebotomy skills.

o   Must be computer literate.

o  Ability to interact and verbally communicate effectively with patients and all levels of personnel in a professional, courteous and effective manner with excellent customer service skills.

o   Ability to multi-task in a high paced environment with good organizational skills.

o   Ability to follow written and oral instructions and to work with general guidance.

o   Knowledge of medical equipment and maintenance.

o   Knowledge of HIPAA regulations.

o   Ability to read, speak, write, and understand the English language fluently.
