    Position Summary: The Phlebotomist draws/collects and processes specimens; independently performs CLIA waived, moderate complexity, and microscopic tests. In addition, they are responsible for customer service, clerical tasks, and quality assurance within the laboratory. The Phlebotomist follows the direction of the laboratory supervisor.

    Organizational Structure/Reporting Relationships: This position reports directly to the Lab Supervisor and is a member of the Medical team. This position has no direct reports.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Demonstrates accurate blood drawing skills, collects specimens in a timely manner.
    • Independently performs waved and moderate complexity testing, including microscopic analysis of urine sediment, vaginal wet mounts, fungal exams, and ferning tests.
    • Properly collects, processes, and stores patient specimens.
    • Performs, evaluates, and documents quality assurance and quality control tests.
    • Follows procedures to ensure proper documentation and notification of alerts.
    • Acts as a resource to medical staff regarding specimen collection, laboratory processing, etc. Participates in training of medical staff.
    • Follows laboratory policies and procedures. Participates in the quality improvement process.
    • Maintains knowledge of and ensures compliance with DOH, CLIA, AAAHC, OSHA, and API rules, regulations and standards.
    • Handles and disposes of biohazardous material in a safe and compliant manner.
    • Stocks laboratory supplies, removes expired supplies, keeps the laboratory clean and orderly.
    • Processes billing rejections from contract laboratory.
    • Actively participate in internal quality improvement teams and work with members proactively to drive quality improvement initiatives in accordance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal and state laws and regulations, and accreditation standards, when assigned.
    • Other job-related duties as assigned

    Background Qualifications

    Required:

    • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
    • Current Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist (MAP)
    • Excellent interpersonal and inter-professional skills.
    • Competent in drawing blood for all age groups, including newborn metabolic screening.
    • Proficient with microscopy as indicated in duties or willing to learn.

    Preferred:

    • Familiarity with health and social issues facing American Indians/Alaska Natives and a desire to promote the delivery of appropriate health services to this population.
    • Experience working in a clinic setting in close contact with other laboratory professionals and medical staff.

    Work Environment: Clinic hours are 8-6, Monday through Friday with occasional extra hours.
