    Medical Assistants (MA) in the medical office setting supports providers by delivering direct and indirect patient care in a professional, courteous, and efficient manner. The MA may assist with clinical procedures, maintains accurate documentation, and provides administrative support to ensure smooth daily operations. The MA functions within their defined scope of practice (based on office type clinic/HOD), under supervision, and in alignment with Mercy's mission and standards of care.

    Job Summary

    Mercy is seeking a compassionate, experienced, and highly organized Lead Medical Assistant to support our Women's Health Clinic 1017B at Mercy Hospital St. Louis. The Lead Medical Assistant serves as a clinical and operational leader within the practice, supporting providers, patients, and fellow team members while ensuring exceptional patient care and efficient clinic operations.

    This role combines advanced clinical responsibilities with leadership duties, including mentoring Medical Assistants, coordinating daily workflow, supporting quality initiatives, and serving as a resource for both staff and providers. The Lead Medical Assistant functions within their defined scope of practice and in alignment with Mercy's mission, values, and standards of care.

    Key Responsibilities

    Clinical Excellence

    • Collect and update patient medical histories, including medication reconciliation.
    • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
    • Assist providers with clinical care and outpatient procedures performed within the Women's Health clinic.
    • Accurately document patient information within the electronic health record (EHR).
    • Administer treatments, immunizations, and other duties as permitted by state regulations and Mercy policies.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality and promote a positive patient experience.

    Leadership & Team Support

    • Act as a team leader and clinical resource for Medical Assistants and clinic staff.
    • Lead or actively participate in daily clinic huddles.
    • Foster a positive, engaged, and patient-centered team environment.
    • Identify operational challenges and recommend effective solutions.
    • Serve as a community preceptor and mentor for newly hired Medical Assistants.
    • Assist with EHR training and reinforce best practices among staff.
    • Perform competency reviews for Medical Assistants as assigned.
    • Serve as a liaison between patients, staff, providers, and clinic leadership.

    Operational & Administrative Responsibilities

    • Complete monthly clinic oversight tasks as assigned by the Practice Manager, including:

    • Monitoring injection refrigerator temperature logs

    • Maintaining and reviewing sample medication logs

    • Monitoring oxygen tank levels and arranging replenishment

    • Checking laboratory and clinical supplies for expiration dates

    • Ordering and maintaining medical supplies

    • Supporting clinic readiness and regulatory compliance

    • Coordinate PTO requests and callouts to ensure appropriate clinic coverage, as delegated by the Practice Manager.

    • Assist in managing staff schedules as applicable.

    • Champion quality performance metrics and proactively identify trends and opportunities for improvement.

    • Support clinic and department-wide strategic and operational initiatives.

    • Perform other duties within the scope of the Medical Assistant role as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education

    • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
    • Completion of Mercy's MA Clinic Academy training upon hire.
    • Successful completion of all competencies required for the Advanced Medical Assistant level.

    Certification

    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Education

    • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.

    Experience

    • Minimum of two (2) years of Medical Assistant experience.
    • Prior Women's Health, OB/GYN, or ambulatory care experience preferred.
    • Previous leadership, precepting, or mentoring experience preferred.

    Skills & Abilities

    • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to effectively coach, mentor, and develop team members.
    • Proficiency with EHR systems and clinical documentation.
    • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
    • Knowledge of outpatient clinical workflows, procedures, and equipment.
    • Ability to prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
    • Commitment to patient-centered care, excellence, and continuous improvement.
    • Demonstrates respect for and understanding of diverse patient populations.

    Work Environment

    • Fast-paced outpatient Women's Health clinic with frequent patient interaction.
    • Requires collaboration with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and support staff.
    • Exposure to clinical equipment, laboratory specimens, and infectious materials.
    • Personal protective equipment (PPE) provided as appropriate.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to push, pull, and/or lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
    • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
    • Ability to bend, kneel, squat, twist, reach, and grip while performing clinical duties.
    • Ability to safely assist patients and operate clinical equipment.

    About Company

    Our Mercy health system was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1986. But our heritage goes back more than 185 years. It began with an Irish woman named Catherine McAuley, who wanted to help the poor women and children of Dublin. Though Catherine had a modest upbringing, she received an unexpected inheritance that allowed her to fulfill her dreams. In 1827, she opened the first House of Mercy in Dublin, intending to teach skills to poor women and educate children. Many volunteers came to help. A few years later, Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy, the first religious order not bound to the rules of the cloister, whose Sisters were free to walk among the poor and visit them in their homes. By the time Catherine died in 1841, there were convents in Ireland and England, and in 1843, the Sisters of Mercy came to the United States.
