UPMC Specialty Care Gastroenterology Associates

At UPMC, we are committed to providing Life Changing Medicine through compassionate, patient-centered care. UPMC Specialty Care Gastroenterology Associates is seeking a Medical Assistant to join our dedicated team in York, PA.

This position offers an opportunity to work alongside providers and clinical staff in a busy gastroenterology practice, supporting patients throughout their healthcare journey. The Medical Assistant plays an important role in delivering high-quality patient care while helping to ensure efficient clinic operations and a positive patient experience.

The ideal candidate is organized, patient-focused, and enjoys working in a collaborative environment while providing exceptional service and support to both patients and providers.

What You'll Do:

  • Room patients and prepare them for provider visits
  • Obtain and document vital signs, medical histories, and other clinical information
  • Assist providers with patient care, examinations, and procedures as needed
  • Manage and respond to patient messages and clinical work baskets
  • Support patient triage activities and assist with clinical workflows when needed
  • Coordinate care activities to help ensure timely and efficient patient service
  • Maintain accurate documentation within the electronic medical record
  • Contribute to a positive patient experience by providing compassionate and professional care
  • Support UPMC's commitment to quality, safety, and service excellence

Schedule:

  • Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.
  • No weekends or holidays

Responsibilities:

  • Accompany patients to exam/procedure room.

  • Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.

  • Collect patient information/history, taking vitals, performing screenings per provider guidelines.

  • Relay instructions to patients/families.

  • Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA and other state and federal regulations.

  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.

  • Complete forms/requisitions as needed.

  • Prepare and managing charts to ensure information completed and filed appropriately.

  • Schedule appointments.

  • Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.

  • Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.

  • Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.

  • Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms.

  • Check schedules and organizing patient flow.

  • Answering calls and providing pertinent information including patient education as directed.

  • Perform clinic procedures according to policy and procedure.

  • Assist physicians with procedures.

  • Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e., OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health.

  • Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data.

  • Comply with all UPMC Health System policies and procedures.

  • Under the direction and supervision of a physician, administer injectable medication and vaccines when appropriate.

  • Other front office responsibilities, as required.

  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.

Medical Assistant:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities

Medical Assistant, Senior

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Successful completion of Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN/RN/EMT

  • OR successful completion of certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA

  • OR at least 1 year of patient care experience required.

  • Must be responsible and demonstrate proficiency in three practice category specific tasks.

  • Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.

Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the Medical Assistant Career Ladder, based on their individual experience and education.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
