Medical Director - AP/CP General Surgical Pathologist

Job Summary

A well-established acute care hospital is seeking an experienced Medical Director to lead its pathology department. This leadership role is responsible for overseeing the delivery of high-quality anatomic and clinical pathology services while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, maintaining operational excellence, and collaborating with hospital leadership and clinical teams.

The ideal candidate is a board-certified pathologist with strong experience in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, proven leadership abilities, and a commitment to quality patient care. The Medical Director will provide diagnostic expertise, support laboratory operations, mentor pathology staff, and help drive continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Medical Director for the hospital pathology department.
  • Provide diagnostic interpretation across the full spectrum of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
  • Review and sign out surgical pathology, cytology, and clinical pathology cases.
  • Perform and interpret intraoperative frozen section consultations.
  • Provide clinical pathology consultation to physicians and healthcare providers.
  • Ensure laboratory operations comply with CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, and other applicable regulatory standards.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with hospital administration, laboratory leadership, and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
  • Oversee laboratory medical staff, provide mentorship, and support professional development.
  • Participate in utilization management, performance improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Assist with laboratory inspections, accreditation activities, and policy development.
  • Maintain accurate and timely pathology reporting while ensuring excellent turnaround times.
  • Promote evidence-based practices and continuous operational improvements.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Board Certified in Anatomic Pathology (AP) and Clinical Pathology (CP).
  • Active Florida medical license or ability to obtain licensure prior to employment.
  • Minimum of 2 years of hospital-based Medical Director experience preferred.
  • Recent experience practicing general surgical pathology.
  • Current experience performing frozen section interpretation.
  • Comfortable practicing the full scope of AP/CP.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered pathology services.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous leadership or medical director experience within a hospital pathology department.
  • Experience with laboratory quality management programs.
  • Knowledge of CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Experience working collaboratively with hospital executives and clinical leadership.
  • Strong background in operational management and laboratory performance improvement.
