Position summary

Baylor Scott & White Health is seeking a fellowship trained, board certified, Advanced Heart Failure Transplant Cardiologist to serve as Medical Director for our Advanced Heart Failure Transplant team for the Central Texas Region.This is an opportunity to lead a robust program with 8 Heart Failure Cardiologists and multiple APPs as part of a robust multidisciplinary team including surgical, imaging, structural and critical care expertise. Our program currently performs approximately 50 heart replacements annually, has excellent SRTR outcomes, and is well poised for future growth via outreach partnerships with nearby affiliated hospitals.

Qualifications

1. The physician must have an M.D., D.O., or equivalent degree from another country
2. Current certification in cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, with additional certification in Heart Failure or substantial experience
3. Documentation of direct involvement in the primary care of ? 20 newly transplant heart or heart/lung recipients and continued to follow the patients for a minimum of 3 months post-operative.
4. Current knowledge of heart transplantation, defined as direct involvement in patient care over the last 2 years.This includes:
   1. Acute and chronic heart failure
   2. Patient and donor selection
   3. Use of mechanical circulatory support devices
   4. Pre and post-operative hemodynamic care
   5. Post-operative immunosuppressive therapy
   6. Histological interpretation and grading of biopsies
   7. Long term outpatient care
5. Must have documented:
   1. Observation of 3 heart procurements
   2. Observation of 3 heart transplants
   3. Management and evaluation of ? 3 multi-organ donors who are donating a heart or heart/lung
6. The physician must be accepted onto the hospitals medical staff, and be on site at this hospital
7. License to practice in Texas

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

Chief, Division of Cardiology and Chair, Department of Medicine

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Five years clinical experience in transplantation, with administrative experience a plus

CLINICAL DUTIES (80% effort):

• Inpatient and outpatient care of heart failure and transplant patients
• Expected call 6-8 weeks/year in the Temple location

Opportunity to perform Cath lab procedures (i.e. right heart catheterization, implantable pulmonary artery monitors) and read ECHO for VAD and Heart Transplant

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (20% effort):

• Participate in the research, development and writing of transplant policies, protocols and practice guidelines
• Implement all transplant program policies and procedures as they pertain to patient care
• Organize, direct and integrate the transplant program with all other departments and services within the hospital.
• Promote a cooperative and collaborative working environment among the clinical disciplines involved in transplant care.
• Maintain an effective working relationship with the medical/surgical staff, transplant service staff, administration and other departments.
• Establish a physician/nurse case management process that fosters cost-effective, high quality patient care.
• Participate in transplant budget planning/management.
• Assists the Transplant Administrator in developing and meeting the transplant programs budgetary goals
• Oversees processes to ensure that transplant nursing staff and clinical transplant coordinators are appropriately oriented to the transplant program and continue to participate in transplant related continuing education programs.

ACADEMIC DUTIES

ACGME education of Cardiology Fellows, Internal Medicine Residents, and supporting a newly developed Advanced Heart Failure fellowship.

Faculty appointment through Baylor College of Medicine at rank commensurate with academic experience is expected, and involvement with the education of medical students is variable dependent on interest.

Research interest is encouraged, with potential for additional protected time based on grant funding

PROGRAM INTIATIVES:

• Lead efforts to develop and maintain the Transplant program.
• Collaborate with the Transplant Administrator to establish transplant program goals and objectives consistent with those of the hospital.
• Collaborate on the development and maintenance of practice guidelines, policies and methodologies for medical/surgical transplant care.
• Participate in site review by regulatory agencies and insurance companies.
• Organize, direct and implement departmental practices to assure continued compliance with applicable laws including the guidelines established by OPTN/UNOS, CMS and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals.
• Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationship with colleagues, referring MDs, hospital personnel, and patients/families in order to achieve maximum operational effectiveness and customer satisfaction.
• Communicate regularly with referring physicians.
• Ensure that adequate attending physician availability is provided to render care to transplant patients.
• Ensure establishment of physician/surgeon call schedules for all transplant care.
• Participate in regional, statewide and national activities affecting the transplant program.
• Attend local, national and international meetings and conferences to remain current regarding issues relevant to the performance of duties.
• Demonstrate consistent, efficient, cost effective and quality transplant care at all times.
• Participate in transplant patient/family satisfaction projects as developed by hospital.

PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT:

Oversee the work of the Transplant programs Quality Management Committee to:

• Determine and implement performance improvement activities appropriate to the transplant program.
• Review and investigate all Transplant performance improvement inquiries.
• Monitor compliance with transplant treatment guidelines, policies and protocols.
• Assure that the quality and appropriateness of patient care are monitored and evaluated and that appropriate actions based on findings are taken on a consistent basis.
• Report quality of care issues promptly to the appropriate individuals, committees and hospital administration.
• Consult with appropriate surgical staff and administration regarding quality care issues and adverse outcomes; identify areas to improve patient care.
• Assure that continuum of care is maintained.
• Review all transplant related peer review and initiate action as necessary.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH:

• Maintain relations with community organizations and legislative bodies whose activities relate to transplant.
• Oversee fundraising activities in support of transplant needs.
• Participate in hospital outreach activities as may be requested by administration.

- Doctorate Degree in Medicine

- Licensed to Practice Medicine in the state of Texas by the Texas Medical Board by start date

- Where Applicable- Employee shall be currently board certified in his or her specialty or demonstrate active pursuit of board certification as defined by the appropriate specialty board of the American Board of Medical Specialties or the Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists
