East Mississippi State Hospital is a state-operated healthcare facility under the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, providing comprehensive inpatient psychiatric, residential, substance use disorder, and long-term care services to individuals across the region. Through a multidisciplinary approach, EMSH serves a diverse population with an emphasis on safety, quality care, recovery-focused treatment, and person-centered support. In addition to its psychiatric services, EMSH operates specialized programs and nursing home services across multiple campuses, including Meridian, Newton, and Kemper, to meet a broad range of clinical and operational needs. About the Position

The Medical Director is a senior physician leadership position responsible for providing clinical oversight, medical direction, and physician supervision for East Mississippi State Hospital. Functioning within the Physician Supervisor classification, this position is accountable for the assessment, diagnosis, evaluation, and determination of patient treatment plans and medical care processes across assigned EMSH programs and services. The Medical Director performs medical procedures and delivers patient care requiring physician-level expertise, while also providing leadership in the development, implementation, and oversight of medical policies, practices, and clinical protocols. This position serves as a key member of the hospital's leadership structure by supporting standards of care, peer review, discharge planning, required medical documentation, and interdisciplinary treatment coordination.

To be successful in this position, the employee must demonstrate exceptional clinical judgment, strong physician leadership, and the ability to oversee medical services in a complex hospital environment. The employee should be able to provide high-quality direct medical care, supervise physicians and nurse practitioners effectively, support standards of care through policy oversight and peer review, and work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to promote safe, coordinated treatment. Success in this role also requires professionalism, sound decision-making, accountability, strong communication, and a consistent commitment to compliance, quality improvement, and positive patient outcomes. The employee must be able to provide medical services across multiple EMSH programs and patient populations, maintain required clinical documentation, collaborate effectively with physicians and interdisciplinary staff, and comply with all applicable standards, protocols, and continuing education requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Requires licensure and typically 1-4 years of post-residency experience. Hiring agency Additional Position Requirements: The employee must possess and maintain an active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Mississippi and must meet all applicable requirements to perform physician-level assessments, diagnosis, treatment, and medical oversight responsibilities within a hospital setting. The position must also meet all EMSH credentialing standards, including privilege and other medical staff requirements applicable to the role. Hiring Agency Qualifications: Experience leading statewide or multi-site telehealth programs. Board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine, with substantial experience in OUD, is considered. Expertise in perinatal OUD, stimulant co-use, and complex comorbidity management. Epic EHR experience and proficiency with integrated PDMP workflows. Minimum Qualifications: • MD/DO with an unrestricted Mississippi medical license • DEA registration in good standing; MATE Act 8-hour SUD training completed/attested (one-time requirement). • Classification requirement: Typically 1-4 years of post-residency experience for the Physician Supervisor job family. • Program preference: 3+ years of post-residency clinical experience, including MOUD via office-based telehealth. • Eligibility to enroll with Medicaid/Medicare; no OIG exclusions. • Demonstrated experience collaborating with APRNs and conducting formal QA/QI. Demonstrated experience providing organizational and managerial oversight. • Experience leading statewide or multi-site telehealth programs. • Expertise in perinatal OUD, stimulant co-use, and complex comorbidity management. • Epic EHR experience and proficiency with integrated PDMP workflows. • Board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine, with substantial experience in OUD is considered. Licenses/Certifications: • Mississippi medical license; DEA registration; BLS (and ACLS if clinically indicated). • Completion/attestation of MATE Act training; ongoing CME in addiction medicine.
