What We Offer:

Team member is responsible for performing all laboratory procedures, including quality control, specimen collection, processing, testing, and reporting of lab results. Team member will also assist in the evaluation of new or modified techniques when required. They will advise and assist in the orientation and training of other personnel on equipment and software as necessary.

 

Schedule / Shift - 

 

This is a PRN position that will be 'as needed', could be a 12 hr day or night or weekend.  Expectation is atleast 2 shifts/month, also 1 major holiday/year.  Rotating between the Tide watch ED and the Bluffton ED.
 
What We're Looking For:
  • Education: 2 Year / Associate Degree, required. Associate degree in chemical, physical, or biological science, or medical laboratory or equivalent education or training OR successfully completed military training of 50 or more weeks.
  • Experience: One year experience as laboratory scientist for specialty areas (BB, Flow, and Micro). (Clinical internships of 12 months duration meet this requirement), preferred. 
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: MLT certification (or eligible) from ASCP or AMT, required.
  • Additional Skills Required:
    • New graduates must obtain certification within 12-months of hire. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment.
    • All individuals who are newly certified ASCP beginning January 1, 2004, must participate and maintain ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) through the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP). All individuals who are newly certified AMT beginning January 1, 2006, must participate and maintain AMT Certification Continuation Program (CCP).
    • Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tests and communicate with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results.
    • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and troubleshooting of instrumentation.
    • Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests.
    • Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations.
    • Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, hospital staff and the public.
    • Ability to read and understand information about instrumentation in laboratory field.
    • Ability to follow written protocols.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Ability to communicate clearly.
What You'll Do:
  • Laboratory Testing: Perform analytical testing of patient specimens while ensuring accurate and timely results. Conduct quality control testing, routine equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, competency assessments, and proficiency testing to maintain testing accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Maintain accurate documentation for laboratory procedures, process test requisitions, prepare and distribute reports, and utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and other computer systems. Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Professional Development: Participate in ongoing education and training to maintain and enhance technical competencies. Support regulatory readiness and inspection preparation by adhering to established laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Customer Service: Provide timely information and consultation to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Foster strong collaboration with other departments to support exceptional patient care.
  • Operations & Inventory: Promote efficient use of laboratory supplies and equipment while assisting with inventory management and maintaining appropriate stock levels.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to process improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance laboratory workflows, quality, efficiency, and patient outcomes.
  • Teamwork & Communication: Collaborate effectively with laboratory staff and interdisciplinary teams to achieve departmental and patient care goals. Maintain professional communication, participate in staff meetings, and assist in resolving operational issues and unusual situations.
  • Specimen Handling: Safely collect, handle, process, and manipulate patient specimens while demonstrating the manual dexterity and technical skills required to perform laboratory procedures safely and accurately.
  • Safety & Quality: Adhere to all laboratory safety policies, infection prevention protocols, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Patient Experience & Culture: Deliver compassionate, patient-centered care by communicating procedures in clear, understandable language and confirming patient understanding through teach-back methods.
