Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)

Location: 6439 Garners Ferry Rd, Columbia, SC 29209
Duration: 1 year contract with the possibility of four 1-year extensions
Shift Schedule:
- First Shift: 8:00 AM 4:30 PM (Monday Friday, including weekends and holidays)
- Second Shift: 4:00 PM Midnight (Monday Friday, including weekends and holidays)
- Third Shift: Midnight 8:00 AM (Monday Friday, including weekends and holidays)
How Many Shifts Needed Per Month: ~41 shifts/month (based on ~10,400 hrs/year 12 months 8 hrs/shift)
Certifications:
- ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) MLT certification required, AND/OR
- AMT (American Medical Technologists) MLT certification required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) per VA policy
Education: Minimum Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory, or related science; completion of a medical technology clinical practice program required
Experience Needed: Minimum 2 years of experience as a generalist MLT - able to perform testing in all areas: Chemistry, Blood Bank, Hematology, Urinalysis, and Microbiology
Special Skills Needed:
- Generalist proficiency across all laboratory sections: Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, and Microbiology
- Experience with laboratory instruments including Abbott Alinity ci, Beckman DXH 900, Stago STA R Max, Ortho Vision Swift, Beckman Coulter Arkay AX-4030, bioMerieux Vitek 2, and others
- Proficiency with VA VISTA LIS, VBECS, and CPRS systems
- Experience performing and documenting quality control, calibration, and equipment maintenance
- Ability to identify and report critical/abnormal results per established protocols
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Knowledge of laboratory safety, infection control, and OSHA standards
Responsibilities:
- Perform laboratory testing accurately across all assigned sections (Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Specimen Processing)
- Perform, document, and resolve quality control; troubleshoot instrument malfunctions
- Accurately identify patients and label specimens with at least two patient identifiers
- Report all test results and call abnormal/critical values to the ordering provider with documented read-back
- Process and inoculate specimens, prepare stains, and perform molecular testing per established protocols
- Maintain and document equipment maintenance logs and preventive maintenance schedules
- Enter and result patient data accurately in the VA VISTA system
- Attend monthly laboratory staff meetings and participate in QA/QI initiatives
- Submit weekly timesheets to the COR and comply with all VAMC policies, HIPAA, and VA mandatory training requirements
- Comply with all accrediting agency requirements (TJC, CAP, AABB, FDA)
