Medical Lead Veterinarian - Den Herder Veterinary Hospital | Waterloo, IA

• Interest In: Small-animal general practice in an AAHA-accredited hospital offering comprehensive preventative care, wellness, dentistry, surgery, senior pet care, urgent/same-day cases, end-of-life care, and compassionate client communication. The hospital offers exposure to advanced medicine and diagnostics, along with a unique and well-established exotic caseload for veterinarians who enjoy variety. Whether your passion is surgery, internal medicine, dentistry, exotics, or another area of veterinary medicine, we want our Medical Lead to continue practicing the medicine they love while helping elevate the hospital around them.
• Medical Lead / Experienced Veterinarian: We are seeking an experienced veterinarian who is excited to combine hands-on clinical medicine with meaningful medical leadership. This is an ideal opportunity for a respected, collaborative DVM who enjoys leading by example, supporting fellow doctors, and having a voice in the continued growth and medical direction of the hospital. The Medical Lead will remain predominantly clinical, while partnering with hospital leadership to champion medical quality, strengthen clinical standards, and foster an environment where the entire team can thrive.
• Lead Medicine, Not Administration: Our Medical Lead serves as the hospital's clinical champion, helping guide medical protocols, promote consistency in patient care, collaborate on challenging cases, and support continued clinical development across the team. This is not a role designed to pull you away from practicing medicine. Instead, it gives you the opportunity to have greater influence on how medicine is practiced while continuing to maintain your own caseload and clinical interests.
• Supportive, Experienced Technical Staff: Practice alongside a dedicated and knowledgeable support team focused on patient care, client education, anesthesia and surgical support, laboratory diagnostics, dentistry, and efficient appointment flow. Our goal is to allow doctors to fully utilize the team around them, focus on medicine, and provide an exceptional experience for patients and clients.
• Layout & Facility Highlights: Well-equipped, AAHA-accredited facility featuring multiple exam rooms, dedicated surgical capabilities, comprehensive dental equipment, in-house diagnostics, radiology, advanced monitoring, and treatment areas designed to support efficient, high-quality patient care.

• Patient Mix: Primarily small-animal general practice with dogs and cats, plus the opportunity to work with a robust and well-established exotic caseload. Experience with exotics is absolutely not required, but the opportunity is here for a veterinarian who would like to learn, expand an existing interest, or bring their own exotic experience to the team.
• Interested in Exotics? This is where Den Herder really stands apart! The team has experience caring for birds, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, hedgehogs, and even less-common species such as raccoons, skunks, and deer. Whether exotics are already your passion or simply something you've always wanted exposure to, there is tremendous opportunity to explore that interest here.

Medical Lead Role Snapshot

Clinical Responsibilities - Approximately 80-90%

• Practice high-quality, compassionate medicine across wellness, diagnostics, dentistry, surgery, internal medicine, urgent care, and complex case management
• Independently manage a broad and engaging caseload with strong clinical judgment
• Build lasting client relationships through thoughtful communication and individualized treatment planning
• Lead by example on the hospital floor through excellent medicine, teamwork, professionalism, and patient advocacy
• Continue developing your own clinical interests and areas of expertise

Medical Leadership Responsibilities - Approximately 10-20%

• Serve as a trusted clinical resource and champion of medical excellence within the hospital
• Help guide medical standards, protocols, and consistency of patient care
• Encourage collaboration and thoughtful discussion among the doctor team
• Partner with hospital leadership on clinical workflows, medical equipment, and quality initiatives
• Support a culture of accountability, communication, continuous learning, and exceptional medicine
• Help shape the hospital's continued clinical growth and future direction
