    Job Description

Additional Hospital Information & Who We are Looking For:

Medical Lead Veterinarian - Kronenwetter Veterinary Care

    Kronenwetter / Greater Wausau, WI

Lead Medicine. Support Great Doctors. Help Shape What's Next.

    • Interest In: Practicing high-quality small-animal medicine within a progressive, AAHA-accredited hospital while having the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the medical direction of the practice.

Kronenwetter Veterinary Care offers an exceptionally broad scope of medicine including wellness and preventative care, internal medicine, advanced diagnostics, comprehensive dentistry, soft-tissue surgery, pain management, dermatology, nutrition, and client education. The hospital also supports integrative and alternative therapies, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, and laser therapy, alongside advanced in-house diagnostics such as ultrasound, digital radiography, and laboratory services.

Doctors interested in continuing to expand surgically can gain exposure to advanced procedures including orthopedics, with opportunities for training and continued skill development. Exotic and avian medicine can also be incorporated for veterinarians interested in a more diverse caseload.

    • Medical Lead / Experienced Veterinarian Opportunity: We're seeking an experienced veterinarian who enjoys practicing excellent medicine and is ready to have a larger clinical impact as our next Medical Lead. Our current Medical Lead is still with the practice, no turnover in this instance!

This is first and foremost a clinical position, not a desk job. You'll spend the majority of your time doing what you became a veterinarian to do: seeing patients, working through cases, performing procedures, and building relationships with clients. The leadership component is about being a leader of medicine, helping maintain strong clinical standards, creating consistency around patient care, supporting collaboration among doctors, and partnering with hospital leadership as the practice continues to grow.

    • A Thoughtful Leadership Transition With Support Already in Place: One of the unique advantages of stepping into leadership at Kronenwetter is that you won't be walking into the role alone. Our current Medical Lead remains an important part of the hospital and is considering stepping back from formal leadership responsibilities while continuing to support the practice. That creates an opportunity for a collaborative, supported transition rather than expecting a new leader to walk in and immediately figure everything out independently. You'll have institutional knowledge within the hospital, an experienced doctor team, hospital leadership, and additional regional support around you as you settle into the role. We're not looking for someone to come in and change everything. We're looking for someone who can listen first, build trust, preserve what's working well, and help guide the team's continued clinical growth.
    • Leadership Experience Isn't the Only Thing That Matters: If you're an experienced veterinarian who has already held a Medical Director or Medical Lead position, we'd love to talk. But we're equally interested in the veterinarian who has naturally become the doctor others turn to, someone who enjoys discussing cases, sharing knowledge, supporting teammates, and setting a positive example on the hospital floor, even if you haven't held a formal leadership title yet.

If you've been thinking about taking the next step in your career but don't want to leave clinical medicine behind, this could be that next step.

    • GP, Urgent Care, or Hybrid Clinical Flexibility: Leadership doesn't mean giving up the medicine you enjoy. Kronenwetter offers flexibility for doctors whose clinical interests lean toward General Practice, Urgent Care, or a combination of both.

Your clinical caseload can reflect your strengths and interests while your Medical Lead responsibilities remain focused on supporting excellent medicine across the hospital.

    • Advanced Medicine + Room to Keep Growing: Being the Medical Lead doesn't mean you're expected to have mastered every area of veterinary medicine. Our broad caseload and clinical capabilities create opportunities to continue developing alongside the doctors you lead.

Whether your interests include surgery and orthopedics, ultrasound, dentistry, internal medicine, urgent care, integrative medicine, exotics, or another area, we'd love to talk about how we can help make it a larger part of your everyday practice.

You'll also have access to our Clinical Tracks Program, offering complimentary RACE-approved CE facilitated by veterinary specialists within our network, in addition to generous continuing education support.

    • Supportive, Experienced Technical Staff: Practice alongside a friendly, compassionate, and highly capable support team committed to excellent patient care. Our technicians provide strong support with anesthesia monitoring, surgical and dental procedures, diagnostics, treatment, therapy modalities, patient care, and client communication, allowing doctors to focus their time on medicine and clinical decision-making.

As Medical Lead, you'll also have the benefit of working with an established team rather than being expected to build your support structure from the ground up.

    • Facility & Clinical Capabilities: Our full-service, AAHA-accredited hospital is equipped to support both comprehensive everyday medicine and more advanced case workups. The facility includes multiple exam rooms, treatment and diagnostic areas, surgical and dental capabilities, in-house laboratory services, ultrasound, digital radiography, therapeutic modalities, and equipment supporting advanced surgical procedures.

For a Medical Lead, that means having the tools and resources around you to practice the standard of medicine you want to champion.

    • Collaborative Leadership Environment: You won't be expected to run the business side of the hospital alone. The Medical Lead works in partnership with hospital and regional leadership, allowing you to concentrate your leadership energy where your veterinary expertise matters most: medicine, doctors, patients, clinical standards, and culture.

We want a leader who is approachable, collaborative, and comfortable creating an environment where doctors can ask questions, respectfully challenge one another, discuss cases, and continue learning.

    • Patient Mix: Enjoy a diverse caseload primarily consisting of dogs and cats, with opportunities to incorporate avian and exotic medicine based on your interests and experience. Between GP, same-day and urgent cases, advanced diagnostics, surgery, dentistry, integrative medicine, and additional species, there is plenty of variety for a veterinarian who enjoys staying clinically engaged.

    Medical Lead Role Snapshot

    Predominantly Clinical

Your primary role remains practicing veterinary medicine: seeing appointments, diagnosing and treating patients, performing procedures, managing cases, and building client relationships.

    Leader of Medicine

    Alongside your clinical work, you'll:

    • Serve as a trusted clinical resource for the veterinary team and help support consistent, high-quality patient care.
    • Collaborate with doctors on challenging cases and clinical decision-making.
    • Help guide medical protocols, standards, and best practices.
    • Lead by example on the hospital floor through excellent medicine, communication, teamwork, and patient advocacy.
    • Partner with hospital and regional leadership on medical equipment, workflow improvements, clinical initiatives, and continued hospital growth.
    • Help create an environment where veterinarians and support teams feel comfortable learning, collaborating, and continuing to improve.
