Medical-Surgical Department Coordinator

General Summary:

This is a full-time 36 hours a week position working 4.5 days with a weekend commitment of at least one weekend per 6 weeks. The Medical-Surgical Coordinator is responsible for the planning, provision, and allocation of functional resources necessary to carry out the day-to-day operations of Clay County Medical Centers Medical-Surgical Department. The Medical-Surgical Coordinator will coordinate the personnel involved in the provision of care within the Medical-Surgical Department, collaborate with nursing and medical providers, and other leaders in the implementation of policies, procedures, standards, and regulations for the Medical-Surgical Department in order to facilitate high quality patient care.

These responsibilities are accomplished by establishing appropriate performance standards and expectations. The Medical-Surgical Coordinator is responsible for the proper planning and allocation of resources under their control. All duties are performed consistently with Clay County Medical Centers Mission, Vision, and Values.

Principal Job Functions:

  • Works in conjunction with the Director of Nursing for direction and coordination of all functions of the Medical-Surgical Department
  • Performs nurse scheduling for the Medical-Surgical Department in coordination with the ER Coordinator and OB Coordinator, while continuously monitoring and facilitating training opportunities.
  • Review and preparation of weekly time studies for review by Director of Nursing and submission to HR
  • Organization of unit, equipment, and supply usage
  • Education surrounding equipment and supply use as needed
  • Coordinates orientation of new nursing team members and training existing team members as needed.
  • Facilitates yearly competency checkoffs
  • Communicates pertinent information regarding patient care activities and operations to appropriate team members
  • Completes chart audit reviews and education for improvement
  • Provides training opportunities in coordination with the Education Coordinator
  • Reviews and develops policies, procedures, standards, and regulations for the Medical-Surgical Department
  • Assists with the prevention and resolution of patient and family concerns and works closely with Case Management and Social Services on care plans.
  • Serves as a resource for unit issues, mentors staff, delegates actions as appropriate and creates an environment of participation.
  • Participates in risk management; reviewing incidents and providing resolution and follow up
  • Completes probationary and yearly evaluations
  • Serves as a representative/liaison to team members, patients, and medical providers

Education and Experience:

  • Current Kansas Registered Nurse
  • 3 years of Medical-Surgical experience
  • Have high-level critical thinking skills and a vast clinical knowledge
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and very strong organizational skills required
