Medical Technician - Phlebotomist The Veterans Health Administration is seeking a Medical Technician - Phlebotomist for the Phlebotomy Department within Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the VA Maine Healthcare System in Togus, ME. This position performs phlebotomy, specimen processing, patient identification, lab request entry, specimen packaging, and related laboratory support duties. Adhere to safety, infection control, and universal precautions before, during, and after blood draws. Enter lab requests into the hospital computer system using multiple formats. Build manifests for send-out testing and gather, aliquot, label, and package specimens for courier pickup. Perform sample storage, packaging, and shipment duties for diagnostic specimens and infectious substances. Verify patient identity and label tubes to ensure proper identification. Draw blood by venipuncture or finger stick from inpatients and outpatients for requested laboratory tests. Perform blood drawing duties courteously and professionally while helping patients feel comfortable. Respond, report, and assist in emergency situations. Observe and report physical or mental changes while patients are being drawn. Answer incoming calls for Laboratory Services and relay accurate information or refer callers to appropriate technical personnel. Prepare referral specimens for shipment. Maintain computer files and manually printed order entry forms. Perform other duties as assigned. Basic Qualifications: Must be a U.S. Citizen. Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English. Must be subject to a background/security investigation. Must pass pre-employment drug testing and remain subject to testing requirements for this designated drug-testing position. Selective Service registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959. Must complete all application requirements and online onboarding requirements. Must provide acceptable identification for employment eligibility verification. Must participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program as required for Department of Veterans Affairs health care personnel. Selected applicant must serve a one-year probationary period. Selective Placement Factor: Applicants must have experience performing phlebotomy and blood draws on human patients. GS-4 Qualification Requirements: Applicants must have at least six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience related to the duties of the position. General experience may include work that demonstrates the ability to perform the position or familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the occupation. Specialized experience may include technical medical laboratory support work, laboratory tests and examinations, preparing reports of findings, or closely related biological laboratory technician work. Applicants may also qualify through education and training, such as qualifying associate-level laboratory assistant training or related post-high-school coursework in chemistry or biological sciences with clinical laboratory assistant or technician training. Applicants may qualify through an equivalent combination of post-high-school education and experience. Transcripts are required if using education to qualify.
