Medical Technologist

  • Ready to take the lead in a fast-paced, high-impact clinical laboratory?
  • Looking for a role where your expertise directly supports patient care and outcomes?

The Medical Technologist performs a variety of clinical laboratory tests as ordered by the medical staff in a CLIA licensed and COLA accredited laboratory. Candidates must be certified through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or other recognized National Certification agency. This position requires a high aptitude for problem-solving as well as the ability to convey information concerning the technical aspects of a wide array of tests and procedures. The individual will also serve as the Lab Safety Officer and assist with laboratory procurement.

Primary Job Duties:

  • Performs waived and moderately complex laboratory tests and procedures
  • Utilizes the electronic Medical Record and Laboratory Information Systems
  • Specimen collection including phlebotomy
  • Assists with Laboratory Procurement and Inventory control
  • Laboratory Safety Officer
  • Supports the accreditation activities per the standards of CLIA, COLA, and AAAHC

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience

  • Requires job related accreditation from a technical school or an applicable skilled trades program and 4 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials

  • Certification as MT, MLS or MLT by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or other recognized National Certification Agency.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience OR Associate's degree and 5 years of experience in a CLIA certified laboratory.
  • Work experience in a laboratory accredited by the College of American Pathology (CAP) or COLA.
  • Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and information sources for clinical laboratory applications including current laboratory methods, equipment and materials.
  • Knowledge of human physiology.
  • Skill in the use of precision tools and complex laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain laboratory records and communicate effectively.
  • The ability to prepare and present technical training of laboratory activities.
  • The ability to perceive colors normally and make olfactory distinctions.
  • Position will typically work 37.5 hours per/week, however based on duties of position, individual may be called to assist with campus and individual crisis during evenings and weekends and during peak periods of high patient volume.
  • During emergency and weather-related events, this position is considered essential personnel.

Analytical: Performs waived and moderately complex laboratory tests and procedures including but not limited to 1. Performing hematology, urinalysis, serology, microbiology and Chemistry procedures according to written protocols and good laboratory practices. 2. Operating and maintaining various laboratory equipment including but not limited to microscopes, chemistry and hematology analyzers, molecular and rapid antigen platforms and centrifuges according to procedure. 3. Communicates test results to the medical staff and furnishes additional information related to testing and results as appropriate. 4. Performs daily quality control procedures, proficiency testing and instrument maintenance according to written policies and procedures.

Utilizes the electronic Medical Record and Laboratory Information Systems: 1. To process patient orders including encounter notes for requests from outside physician offices and direct laboratory appointments per protocols. 2. To process and deliver patient results and add reflex orders to assure proper patient billing. 3.To collect data and complete reports associated with regulatory requirements for test documentation across all three phases of clinical laboratory testing including pre- analytical, analytical, and post analytical. 4. Completes a daily review of all

manually entered test results for precision and accuracy. Issues corrected patient reports when necessary.

Quality Improvement: Performs quality improvement procedures to include but not limited to quality control, calibrations, calibration verifications, proficiency testing and continuing education according to written policies and procedures. Completes all work associated with annual competency documentation. Supports the accreditation activities per the standards of CLIA, COLA, and AAAHC. Participates in committee assignments and continuing education to advance SHS mission.

Lead Technologist: Manages Laboratory inventory through periodic inventory checks paying attention to expiration dates. Assists laboratory manager with procurement of supplies via established vendors and state procurement practices. Places requests with reference laboratories for necessary collection supplies. Updates and helps to maintain the Laboratory Procurement database. Updates and maintains laboratory Safety Documents including the Chemical Inventory, Biosafety Plan, SDS library and annual safety risk assessment. Manages laboratory safety inspections.

Pre-Analytical: Specimen collection including Proper patient preparation and identification, a knowledge of appropriate specimen requirements and labeling. Performs specimen collection including phlebotomy, nasal, nasopharyngeal and pharyngeal swabs.
