The Medication Technician provides safe, efficient medication administration daily. In this role, you will implement the physicians order by adhering to the six rights of medication administration for all residential prescription or non-prescription treatments and medications. This role may also be responsible for basic wound care and 1st aid treatments. The Medication Technician will monitor for medication effectiveness, adverse reactions, medication regimen compliance and refusal of medication.
The Medication Technician adheres to the residential standards and rights as outlined in DHS chapter 83 for CBRF compliance.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Knowledge of medication actions, medication effects on body systems, and side effects
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and/or written instructions
- Ability to administer medications to elderly, confused, and emotionally upset residents in a safe, mature, and respectable manner
- Ability to accurately document administration of medications
- Maintains state regulatory requirements for annual training and/or continuing education
- Ensure compliance with resident rights and HIPAA policies
- Demonstrates teamwork by communicating with other staff and actively working to resolve problems
- Provides patience, compassion, and empathy in all interactions with residents
- Interacts and communicates with staff, residents and families respectfully at all times
- Utilizes standard precautions and follows infection control procedures
- Observes and informs supervisor immediately of any changes in resident’s health condition, change of behaviors
- Reports immediately any unusual events such as abuse/neglect, and emergency situations
- Practices proper body mechanics and safe handling techniques
- Maintain accurate inventory of medications, ensuring proper storage, labeling, and disposal in accordance with state and facility policies
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor, within the scope of a medication technician's roles and responsibilities
- Maintains professional approach to responsibilities

Education, Skills and Experience Requirements:
- Experience working with a minimum of 20-resident census medication passing
- Understanding of medication administration principles including dosage, side effects, and safety precautions
- Experience using English language skills, written and verbal
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a care team
- Compassionate, patient, and respectful approach to working with older adults
- Completion of the State of Wisconsin approved Medication Technician Program
- Wisconsin Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant
- ECP - Electronic Charting System Experience, preferred
- CBRF certifications in medication administration, standard precautions, fire safety, first aid and choking
Physical Demands:
- Able to push 50# medication cart on a carpeted surface
- Assist with the evacuation of residents in the event of an emergency
- Able to push, pull, lift or carry up to 50lbs as needed
