How you'll contribute  

  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
  • Use research and evidence-based practice, guidelines, standards, regulations, and principles of safety to implement the perioperative information technology plan and develop perioperative documentation content. 
  • Implement clinical data requirements for perioperative patients as they relate to organizational policies, procedures, business operations, national quality and safety initiatives, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and social and environmental impacts. 
  • Coordinate the advancement of the perioperative clinical information technology system and tools to satisfy the above data requirements.
  • Use results of evaluation analyses to determine the impact of the perioperative information technology plan on the perioperative RN, customers, families, organizational resources, networks, and the health care organization. 
  • Advocate for patients' needs and rights pertaining to the perioperative clinical information system, including issues of confidentiality (eg, HIPAA, privacy and security) and access to medical information.
  • Participate in vendor and organizational stakeholder sessions for selection of perioperative information technology documentation system and tools.
  • Interact with and promote collaboration with vendor partners and organization stakeholders where design decisions are made related to content, workflow, and clinical practice tools for perioperative information technology documentation system and tools.
  • Act as a liaison between nursing and members of the internal and external perioperative information technology design and clinical documentation teams.
  • Analyze order requirements and design, clinical documentation needs, user interface design, and database aggregation needs with content vendors to customize content to produce organizational specific order sets, clinical documentation sets, decision support tools, and reports.
  • Verify information systems and tools (eg, clinical decision support) reflect documentation that supports a culture of safety. 
  • Address documentation and organizational barriers that prevent full integration of safe patient-centered care and quality patient outcomes in the perioperative setting. 
  • Verify alignment of order sets and perioperative clinical documentation content with the clinical transformation objectives of the information system vendor implementation plan.
  • Promote the use of standardized nursing languages and other nationally recognized terminologies in perioperative documentation to enhance interoperability.
  • Assume a leadership role in organizational-wide information technology committees. 
  • Participate in current workflow mapping and future workflow development, application design and development, content issues resolution and implementation, and ongoing support of the perioperative information system.
  • Identify standardized data sets/values that facilitate development of perioperative databases for research (eg, NDNQI) and contribute to patient registries (eg, National Cardiovascular Data Registry). 
  • Analyze data and information from the EHR, national databases (eg, NHSN), or patient registries (eg, American Joint Replacement Registry) to evaluate and benchmark perioperative practice for process or structural quality improvement initiatives. 
  • Contribute to development of policies and procedures related to physician order sets and perioperative clinical documentation.
  • Implement change management strategies to mitigate resistance when implementing, upgrading, or moving the perioperative clinical information system toward a fully integrated computerized patient record.
  • Educate perioperative personnel or other clinicians across the health care system (if applicable) about the implementation plan for the perioperative information system and relevant informatics issues (eg, data security, Health Level Seven [HL7] Standards, meaningful use [MU], quality, and safety reporting requirements). 
  • Develop guidelines for vendor demonstrations of perioperative information technology systems to most efficiently use organizational resources.
  • Demonstrate current and new perioperative information systems to perioperative personnel.
  • Identify other applications that may help perioperative personnel assimilate information technology into their daily practice (eg, online medical textbooks, MEDLINE literature searches, email, remote access).
  • Assist with enhancements and maintenance of the organization's or health care system's electronic perioperative documentation system and web sites.
  • Use project management skills and methodologies to implement the perioperative information technology plan. 
  • Act as a role model and mentor to perioperative nurses, informatics nurses, and informatics students to foster professional development and improve nursing knowledge about healthcare information technology (HIT).

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing

  • Current registered nurse license in state of employment

  • Master's degree in nursing informatics or health information technology or a Master's in nursing with a post-graduate certificate in informatics 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

 

Qualifications Required

  • Minimum of five years clinical nursing experience

  • Minimum of two years information system administration, including participation in implementation of a major information system/tool

  • Computer proficiency in (system name here) system and Microsoft® applications (eg, Word, Excel®, PowerPoint®)

  • Ability to translate business and patient requirements into complex computer applications

  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and planning skills

  • Strong verbal and written skills, including communication skills that promote interpersonal relations, customer service, and teamwork

 

Preferred: 

  • Certified Nurse, Operating Room certification (CNOR)

  • Informatics Board Certified (RN-BC) or Certified Professional in Healthcare Information & Management Systems (CPHIMS)

  • Project management skills

  • Design requirements/specifications writing

  • Contract negotiation skills

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Long periods of sitting, with some standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching

  • Lifting up to 20 pounds

  • Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop, telephone, and other office equipment

  • Potential exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases
