Melt Shop Process Trainee, Ladle/Refractory & Crane

Your impact
As a trainee in our melt shop, you’ll rotate through the core stages of steelmaking—learning the Furnace, Ladle Furnace, Casting Machine, and Refractories. You’ll master visual checks from the pulpit, support production teammates, and help keep our operation safe, clean, and reliable. Along the way, you’ll contribute ideas that improve how we work.
How you’ll contribute
- Cross-train in Furnace, Ladle Furnace, Casting Machine, and Refractories
- Conduct visual inspections from the pulpit to identify hazards and equipment issues
- Assist Ladle Furnace operators, Crane operators, and Maintenance as needed
- Fill in as Scrap Crane Operator and as a Second Helper when required
- Report any unsafe conditions immediately; communicate production needs and concerns
- Complete equipment inspection reports every shift
- Execute direction from operations support management safely and on time
- Maintain housekeeping standards in your work area
- Troubleshoot operational issues using knowledge, experience, and teamwork
- Follow safety rules and PPE requirements to prevent injuries
- Perform minor/routine maintenance or repairs without maintenance personnel when appropriate
- Recommend improvements to processes and work methods as part of continuous improvement
- Understand and follow start-up, shutdown, and emergency procedures
What it takes
- Rotating shift availability, including weekends and holidays
- Overtime as required (planned and unplanned emergencies); some overtime will be required
- Ability to thrive amid temperature extremes; chemicals; dust, fumes, and mists; uneven surfaces; loud noise; elevated work areas; and confined spaces
- Lift up to 50 lbs; climb ladders and stairs; stand for extended periods
- Reliable attendance, strong work ethic, attention to detail, and organizational skills
- Quick learner who can multitask and is willing to be cross-trained
- Basic computer literacy
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience preferred
Equipment & skills
- You should be proficient in: Crane Operation
- Machines & technologies you’ll use: Overhead Crane
