About the Role:

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Melt Superintendent to oversee all operations within the melt department of our foundry. This position plays a critical leadership role in ensuring efficient, safe, and high-quality melting processes that support production goals. The Melt Superintendent will lead and develop teams, drive process improvements, and maintain strict compliance with environmental, health, and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct and supervise daily melt department operations to achieve production schedules, quality standards, and safety objectives.

  • Lead a team of melt supervisors, furnace operators, and support staff, ensuring proper staffing, training, and performance management.

  • Monitor and control melting processes for optimal efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Ensure proper alloying, charging, and furnace operations in line with metallurgical specifications and customer requirements.

  • Maintain strict adherence to safety and environmental regulations, implementing corrective actions when needed.

  • Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure reliable furnace and melt equipment operation, driving preventive maintenance and rapid troubleshooting initiatives.

  • Support continuous improvement activities by identifying process bottlenecks and implementing corrective and preventive solutions.

  • Analyze operational data and production metrics to drive productivity and scrap reduction.

  • Develop, maintain, and update melt department procedures, work instructions, and training programs.

  • Collaborate with quality and engineering teams to resolve metallurgical or process issues impacting product performance.

  • Maintain inventory control of raw materials, alloys, and refractories to ensure uninterrupted melt operations.

  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and high performance within the melt department.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Engineering, or a related field strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive foundry melt experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or superintendent role.

  • Extensive knowledge of melting practices and furnace operations (induction or cupola as applicable).

  • Strong understanding of metallurgical processes, alloy specifications, and quality control standards.

  • Proven ability to lead teams effectively in a union or nonunion environment.

  • Strong safety orientation with a track record of maintaining a safe work environment.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives a plus.

  • Proficiency with production reporting and ERP/CMMS systems preferred.
