Normal Work Schedule: Flexible; 10 to 20 hours per week.
Job Summary: The UREC Membership Desk Assistant provides excellent customer service to all members and guests. UREC Membership Staff shares accurate information about UREC services, membership programs, facility features, and hours of operation. This position registers/updates memberships, collects membership fees, follows/applies all UREC policies relating to membership services, resolves membership concerns, and informs supervisor of unusual situations or unresolved issues.
UREC Membership Staff undergo extensive training in order to operate several database systems with access to private and sensitive information, assist with various projects and reports, and provide outstanding customer service to members by responding to issues, complaints and inquiries. Membership Staff must always be courteous and helpful, even during busy times and stressful situations; must be able to multi-task and handle several duties at once
Required Minimum Qualifications: Must be currently enrolled and continuing as a part-time or full-time Undergraduate or Graduate student at The University of Alabama for the 2026-2027 academic year. Must be available to work at least 10 hours per week. Must have some previous customer service coursework or experience, such as hospitality, retail/sales, help desk/technical support, office/administration, or other relevant field. Volunteer or classroom experience will be acceptable.
Skills and Knowledge: Basic understanding of standard office software (word processing, spreadsheet, database, email/internet) as well as other general office equipment. Strong organization, communication and customer service skills. Ability to follow instructions and work independently with minimum to moderate supervision. An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures. Leadership and public relations skills. Decision-making skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous membership or guest services experience preferred. Previous experience in a fitness facility environment preferred.
Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
