CALHOUN-GILMER CAREER CENTER MENTOR TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Previously attended mentor teaching training.
  2. Must have a current West Virginia certificate and be employed as a teacher in the same or similar area as the intern teacher when possible.
  3. Should have at least five years teaching experience.
  4. Should have an in-field master's degree. This is not mandatory.
  5. Can communicate openly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  6. Demonstrates an ability to motivate.
  7. Shows an interest in assisting teachers new to the profession.
  8. Is committed to professional ethics and confidentiality.
  9. Demonstrates an interest in learning and teaching new instructional strategies. RESPONSIBILITIES
  10. Attend mentor teaching sessions;
  11. Schedule pre-conference, observation, and post-conference sessions with assigned new teacher weekly during the first semester, which may, at the mentor teacher's discretion, be reduced to biweekly during the second semester
  12. Assist new teachers in a supervisory rather than an evaluative role;
  13. Attend all staff development sessions and complete necessary assignments for mentor teachers;
  14. Serve as a member of a professional support team which meets monthly;
  15. Keep the principal informed of interventions with the assigned new teacher without betraying confidentiality;
  16. Keep all interventions with and discussions regarding the assigned novice teacher confidential;
  17. Learn, practice, and teach instructional strategies to assigned new teacher as needed;
  18. Provide written documentation of interventions with assigned new teacher as needed;
  19. Keep or complete other pertinent records as required;
  20. Complete mentorship commitments beyond the instructional day when necessary; and
  21. Complete any other duties as assigned by the director JOB GOALS To provide new teachers with professional partnerships which may give them opportunities for improving instruction, bonding with the system, and developing a collegial network. REPORTS TO: Director
