A growing MEP consulting firm delivering mechanical, plumbing, and electrical design solutions across a variety of commercial sectors. With teams across multiple locations, the firm is known for providing responsive service, quality engineering, and long-term client partnerships.

Position Overview

The Design Engineer is responsible for leading projects from kickoff through construction administration. This individual manages project scope, schedules, design execution, client communication, and deliverables while mentoring designers and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.

This role offers a defined growth path into Team Lead and senior engineering positions.

Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership
Lead projects from kickoff through final closeout.
Serve as the primary client contact for assigned projects.
Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, and design deliverables.
Coordinate project kickoff meetings and establish project milestones.
Identify missing information early and proactively resolve scope, scheduling, and coordination issues.
Maintain accurate project schedules and communicate changes to stakeholders.
Prepare and support additional service requests and scope modifications.
Design & Engineering
Develop design concepts and engineering solutions for building systems.
Provide technical direction to designers and project team members.
Review drawings, calculations, specifications, and design documents for quality and code compliance.
Coordinate design efforts across disciplines to ensure project consistency.
Collaborate with Principal Engineers to validate design direction and review project deliverables.
Assist with production efforts when necessary to support project deadlines.
Coordination & Client Communication
Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, civil engineers, contractors, and vendors.
Communicate project progress, technical decisions, and deliverables to clients.
Interpret and apply applicable building codes, energy standards, and local amendments.
Support site visits, field investigations, and project documentation.
Construction Administration
Review submittals and shop drawings.
Respond to RFIs and contractor inquiries in a timely manner.
Support permitting, plan review, and construction-phase activities.
Maintain project records and track outstanding issues through completion.
Team Development
Mentor and coach junior designers.
Participate in developing design standards, quality control procedures, and best practices.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance project execution and team performance.
Qualifications
Required
Mechanical, Plumbing, or Electrical design experience within an engineering consulting environment.
Strong understanding of building systems and applicable codes.

Proficiency with:
Revit
AutoCAD
Microsoft Office
Project management software
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experience interacting directly with clients.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills.

Preferred
EIT certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Experience leading project teams and mentoring junior staff.
Experience with commercial, industrial, healthcare, hospitality, mixed-use, or mission-critical projects.
Familiarity with energy compliance, permitting, and construction administration processes.
