Job Title: MEP Inspector / Project Engineer (NYCHA Capital Improvements)

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced MEP Inspector / Project Engineer to support capital improvement and rehabilitation projects across a large public housing portfolio in New York City. This role will focus on inspecting and documenting the installation, repair, and replacement of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and building systems within occupied residential buildings. The ideal candidate will have experience working on NYCHA, public agency, multifamily residential, or institutional renovation projects and is comfortable coordinating with contractors, residents, construction managers, and agency representatives.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily inspections of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and life safety system installations within occupied residential buildings.
• Monitor rehabilitation and capital improvement work including boiler replacements, HVAC upgrades, domestic water systems, electrical service upgrades, lighting retrofits, fire alarm systems, elevators, roofing, and building envelope improvements.
• Verify contractor work complies with project plans, specifications, NYCHA standards, NYC Building Code, NEC, Mechanical Code, Plumbing Code, and applicable agency requirements.
• Document daily construction activities, manpower, equipment, materials, and site conditions through detailed field reports and photographs.
• Conduct inspections of apartment renovations, common area upgrades, building systems replacements, and infrastructure improvements.
• Coordinate with Resident Engineers, Construction Managers, contractors, and agency personnel regarding project progress and quality concerns.
• Review RFIs, submittals, change orders, and field conditions to support project execution.
• Witness testing, startup, balancing, commissioning, and acceptance of MEP systems.
• Identify deficiencies, punch list items, and non-compliant work; track corrective actions through completion.
• Monitor contractor adherence to site safety requirements and OSHA regulations, particularly within occupied residential environments.
• Interact professionally with residents and site staff while minimizing disruptions during construction activities.

Essential Skills

• 3-10 years of MEP inspection, construction management, or field engineering experience.
• Experience on NYCHA, public housing, multifamily residential, healthcare, educational, or government facility projects.
• Strong knowledge of building mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and life safety systems.
• Experience inspecting HVAC equipment, boilers, chillers, pumps, domestic water systems, electrical distribution systems, emergency generators, lighting, and fire alarm systems.
• Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and technical submittals.
• Familiarity with NYC Building Codes, NEC, NFPA standards, and applicable MEP regulations.
• Experience preparing detailed daily reports and maintaining project documentation.
• Strong coordination skills with contractors, owners, agency representatives, and project stakeholders.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and project documentation platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous NYCHA experience strongly preferred.
• Experience supporting PACT, Comprehensive Modernization, Energy Performance Contracts (EPC), or other public housing capital improvement programs.
• NICET, ICC, EIT, PE, CxA, or other relevant certifications are a plus.
• Experience with occupied renovation projects and resident coordination efforts.
• Understanding of commissioning, startup, testing, and turnover procedures for MEP systems.
• Familiarity with DASNY, SCA, DDC, MTA, Port Authority, or other NYC public agency projects.

Work Environment

This is an on-site field inspection role supporting residential capital improvement projects throughout New York City. The position requires regular presence in occupied residential buildings, mechanical rooms, apartments, rooftops, and active construction areas. Inspectors will work closely with construction management teams, contractors, and public agency representatives to ensure successful project delivery while maintaining safety, quality, and resident satisfaction.

This is a Contract position based out of Brooklyn, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $65.00/hr.
