Position Description

Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation's largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Over the years we have worked very hard to keep Seattles electricity affordable, reliable, and environmentally sound. Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.

We are seeking qualified Meter Electricians to join our Technical Metering Operations team in the Transmission & Distribution Division. Job tasks include the installation and removal of electrical meters, repairing, testing, and calibrating a variety of meters. These positions are assigned to and under the general supervision of the Technical Metering Supervisors.

Job Responsibilities

Here is more about what you'll be doing:

  • Checks, calibrates and maintains metering systems at substations and power generation plants.
  • Repairs, tests and calibrates meters, test equipment, instrument transformers and related equipment. Maintains stock of parts and materials.
  • Inspects customer-installed service equipment to ensure compliance with service requirements and tests for proper phasing, voltage, amperage and continuity.
  • Installs and removes watt-hour meters, metering transformers and other equipment, coordinating with customers, engineers, contractors and other departments.
  • Disconnects or reconnects electrical services and assists in the collection of overdue utility bills.
  • Prepares and updates meter maps, drawings and records to ensure accurate billing and load information for customers.
  • Investigates complaints and tests/troubleshoots metering and related electrical problems and investigates and documents the incidence of current diversion.
  • Advises customers, electricians and other divisions on meter and service connection requirements.
  • Programs computerized equipment for information storage, retrieval or analysis.
  • Audits meter installations and systems to detect and correct metering errors and failures that result in lost or delayed revenue and customer dissatisfaction.
  • Assures accuracy of measurements and data by utilizing and maintaining a system of standards, transfers and records precisely traceable to the National Bureau of Standards.
  • Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Requires three years of experience in the construction, repair or maintenance of electronic equipment or completion of an apprenticeship program for electric meter service and repair (journey-level status) (or a combination of education, training or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

Work Environment/Physical Demands

Requires lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires working outdoors in all types of weather. Requires working at heights when installing meters and associated metering equipment. Requires bending, kneeling or stooping to perform work. May deal with customers who are angry.

License, Certification and Other Requirements

Current Washington State drivers license.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Three or more years in Metering and Meter Technology.

  • Experience in Meter Field installation and maintenance.

  • Primary and substation metering.

  • Knowledge and experience using electrical testing and measuring devices and equipment i.e. Fluke Meter, Amp and Voltage testers etc.

  • Arc Flash and NEC 70E Arch Flash requirements.

  • Knowledge of Meter Programs and forms as well as NERC and FERC regulations.

  • Experience with metering of co-generation, substation and intertie meter testing.

  • Experience with AMI meter/communication systems.

The full salary range for this position is $71.69 to $71.69 per hour.
