Job Description
Metrology Programmer

Metrology Programmer

Position Overview
The Metrology Programmer develops, validates, and maintains automated inspection programs and routines for vision and optical metrology systems to ensure product conformance to engineering drawings and specifications. This role supports production and quality engineering by translating GD&T requirements and blueprints into reliable inspection routines, conducting First Article Inspections (FAIs), supporting PPAP submissions, and applying SPC/MSA practices to drive continuous improvement in measurement processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and optimize automated inspection programs for OGP SmartScope and other vision/metrology systems to inspect precision components.
  • Translate engineering drawings and GD&T callouts into robust inspection routines and measurement plans.
  • Perform First Article Inspections (FAIs) and generate detailed inspection reports to support PPAP and release activities.
  • Implement and maintain measurement processes aligned with MSA, Gage R&R, and calibration requirements to ensure measurement traceability and repeatability.
  • Create and maintain inspection documentation, including program files, process sheets, setup instructions, and tooling/fixture notes.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to resolve non-conformances, troubleshoot inspection issues, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Collect and analyze measurement data using SPC tools to monitor process stability and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Train and mentor inspection technicians and operators on program operation, part setup, and best practices for vision systems.
  • Support continuous improvement projects to reduce inspection time, improve measurement reliability, and streamline PPAP/FAI workflows.
  • Manage program revisions and maintain a repository of inspection routines and supporting documentation.
  • Participate in equipment qualification, software upgrades, and validation activities for vision and metrology systems.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience programming automated inspection systems or vision/metrology equipment; experience with OGP SmartScope strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in GD&T, blueprint reading, and translating drawing tolerances into measurement strategies.
  • Hands-on experience with First Article Inspections (FAI), PPAP processes, and preparing inspection reports for supplier and customer reviews.
  • Working knowledge of Vision Systems, optical comparators, and common metrology equipment for precision components inspection.
  • Practical experience with Gage R&R, MSA, SPC data collection and analysis, and use of statistical tools to drive process control.
  • Familiarity with metrology software and data export formats, plus competency with Microsoft Excel and SPC software packages.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate measurement results and technical information clearly to cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects, manage program revisions, and work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Certifications such as ASQ CQT, CMM operator certification, or equivalent metrology/quality credentials are a plus.
