About the Opportunity

Summary

The Mills Institute Educational Talent Search Program is currently seeking 4 highly motivated, knowledgeable, creative, engaging, student focused, experienced Summer Assistant/Tutors to support the program activities and academic component. Academic courses will be taught by instructors to Oakland students in grades 6th-12th. We seek Summer Assistant/Tutors who possess the skills to addresses students' needs, interests, abilities, and curiosities in various subjects and activities offered throughout the summer program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience and ability to effectively work with students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds similar to METS Program participants.

  • Mission-driven and passionate about programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate academic support programs including advising, workshops, fieldtrips, assessment, follow-up and resource referral.

  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to take direction, prioritize, and work independently.

  • Demonstrated experience-solving problems including conflict resolution.

  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure or on deadline, maintaining a professional composure when dealing with common problems that occur in events and classroom settings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom support and assistance to the Summer Instructor. Provide academic tutoring to students.

  • In collaboration with METS team, supervise all METS related activities, lunch recesses, events, field trips and college tours.

  • Assist in providing comprehensive and hands-on workshops to program participants.

  • Assist with coordination and implementation of all facets of the METS Summer Program.

  • Attend staff orientation/planning sessions and program activities. Participate in weekly METS staff meetings.
