The California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) Microbial Diseases Laboratory (MDL) Branch is responsible for diagnostic and surveillance testing, applied research projects, and education and training for the identification and characterization of bacterial, mycobacterial, fungal, and parasitic pathogens of public health importance.
The Microbiologist I works within the Mycobacterial Drug Susceptibility Testing Unit of the Mycobacterial, Mycotic & Parasitic Diseases Section of the Microbial Diseases Laboratory Branch, under the direct supervision of the Research Scientist Supervisor I.
Under direct supervision, the Microbiologist I performs duties associated with sample receipt, processing, culture, identification, and drug susceptibility testing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The Microbiologist performs quality control (QC) and follows quality assurance (QA) procedures, uses the MDL Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and applies good safety practices in the workplace. Some functions performed by the Microbiologist I will be conducted under Biosafety Level 3 conditions, requiring the use of appropriate respiratory protection. The candidate is expected to have basic laboratory knowledge and skills in order to perform the duties of this position, including, but not limited to: culture inoculation, ability to use a pipette, demonstration of good aseptic technique, knowledge and understanding of basic operation of general laboratory equipment (e.g. incubators, freezers, autoclave), and demonstration of safe laboratory practices when handling infectious and/or hazardous materials.

The salary range is $33.27 - $49.02 depending on experience and qualifications.
This is a part-time, on-site position, with flexible hours during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. Depending on the workload, 8-16 hours per week are expected. Work on weekends, holidays, and overtime coverage may be offered during a public health emergency, but it is not required.

Possession of a current Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) Certificate. Applicants who do not possess the required California PHM certificate but are eligible for the examination for certification may apply and be approved for employment. Public Health Microbiologist Certification within 6 months of appointment is required.
