SUMMARY

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Heluna Health invite applications for a full-time Microbiologist in the CDPH Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory (VRDL). The candidate will perform molecular and serological testing for infectious diseases in humans. The candidate will contribute to public health efforts to detect and study pathogens of public health importance using standard molecular and microbiological testing strategies, including real-time PCR and standard and next-generation sequencing.

This position is tentatively funded until 07/31/2027. This position may be extended if funding is available.

The position is onsite in Richmond, CA.  Must be able to work flexible hours that may include weekends and holidays.

Salary range is$37.63 - $56.02 per hour depending on experience and qualifications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Extraction of nucleic acids from human specimens
  • Perform real-time PCR and genetic sequencing procedures to characterize measles, mumps, mpox, VZV, and hepatitis A viruses and Rickettsia according to established SOPs
  • Support whole genome sequencing work on viruses of pathogenic potential
  • Interpret and report testing results into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Prepare for and perform surge testing for state-wide outbreaks of public health concern
  • Adhere and contribute to Quality Assurance protocols and standards
  • Follow safety and quality control procedures in the handling of hazardous biological and chemical materials
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Participate in training of other technical staff, local laboratory staff, and microbiologist trainees in testing procedures
  • Prepare technical reports and collaborate in preparation of papers

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • The ideal candidate will have a solid laboratory background in molecular microbiology (virology preferred), including at least three years of experience performing RNA/DNA extractions and real-time PCR. At least two years will include work with measles, mpox, and hepatitis A viruses.
  • Knowledge and experience in laboratory work environments with infectious organisms performing Sanger and next generation sequencing of viruses (BSL-2 minimum)
  • Able to follow verbal instructions and written protocols
  • Familiarity with high-throughput laboratory automation
  • Strong communication skills, self-motivation, and proven ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization and planning skills to ensure projects are complete under established deadlines and timelines.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.

 Education/Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a biological science, with course work in chemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology is required.
  • At least 4 years working experience in a public health laboratory is required.

Certificates/Licenses

  • Possession of a Public Health Microbiologist certificate or eligibility for the Public Health Microbiologist training program, preferred but not required.
