Primary Purpose
Assist the principal in the administration, instructional leadership, supervision, and daily operations of the middle school while leading a comprehensive system of academic, behavioral, social-emotional, attendance, and counseling supports for students in grades 6-8.
The Assistant Principal of Student Support and Counseling will promote a safe, orderly, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment. The employee will coordinate counseling and student-support services that address the academic, career, personal, social, behavioral, and developmental needs of early adolescents.
The employee will collaborate with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community partners to remove barriers to learning, improve attendance and behavior, support students' transition into and out of middle school, and prepare students for successful entry into high school.
Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university
- Valid Texas Principal or Principal as Instructional Leader certificate
- Valid Texas School Counselor certificate
- Valid Texas teaching certificate
- Meet all applicable Texas Education Agency and State Board for Educator Certification requirements
- Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System appraiser certification preferred or obtained within the district-established timeline
- Crisis prevention, mental health first aid, threat assessment, or trauma-informed practices training preferred
Experience
- Minimum of three years of successful classroom teaching experience preferred
- Successful experience working with middle school students preferred
- Experience as a school counselor, administrator, student-support specialist, or campus instructional leader preferred
- Experience managing student discipline, attendance, behavioral interventions, crisis response, or comprehensive counseling programs preferred
Special Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of the academic, behavioral, social, emotional, and developmental needs of students in grades 6-8
- Knowledge of Texas laws, regulations, and district policies governing school administration and school counseling
- Knowledge of the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs
- Knowledge of middle school curriculum, instruction, assessment, promotion standards, and high school transition requirements
- Knowledge of positive behavior interventions, restorative practices, conflict resolution, and discipline procedures
- Knowledge of student mental health, suicide prevention, bullying prevention, child abuse reporting, threat assessment, and crisis response
- Knowledge of special education, Section 504, dyslexia, multilingual education, gifted and talented education, and multi-tiered systems of support
- Ability to provide short-term individual and small-group counseling
- Ability to manage student discipline fairly, consistently, and in accordance with law and district policy
- Ability to interpret academic, assessment, attendance, discipline, and intervention data
- Ability to conduct investigations and prepare clear, accurate documentation
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries
- Strong leadership, communication, conflict-resolution, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with middle school students, parents, employees, and community members
- Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies and emotionally charged situations
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, deadlines, and interruptions
