Job Title: Middle School English Language Arts Teacher

Description: To provide high-quality English Language Arts instruction to 6th-grade students, fostering a love for reading, writing, and critical thinking. We are seeking a dynamic educator who can bridge the transition from elementary to middle school expectations while meeting the diverse needs of all learners.
Job Summary: The position of 6th Grade ELA Teacher is established for the purpose of delivering comprehensive writing and language instruction; facilitating student growth in alignment with Common Core Writing and Language Standards; and equipping students with the communication skills necessary for secondary academic success.
Key Responsibilities:
- Writing Instruction: Plan and deliver lessons focused on various writing genres, including argumentative, informative/explanatory, and narrative compositions.
- Language Mechanics: Provide direct instruction in English grammar, usage, punctuation, and spelling to enhance student clarity and precision.
- The Writing Process: Guide students through all stages of the writing process: pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
- Assessment & Feedback: Utilize rubrics and district-approved tools to provide detailed, actionable feedback on student writing samples and language assessments.
- Differentiation: Adapt writing prompts and language exercises to support various skill levels, including providing scaffolds for struggling writers and extensions for advanced students.
- Collaborative Teamwork: Work closely with the 6th-grade team and the Director of Special Populations to ensure writing goals are accessible to all learners.
- Communication: Maintain professional contact with parents regarding student progress in writing proficiency and language development.
- Professionalism: Demonstrate a commitment to punctuality, ethical behavior, and the confidentiality of student records and performance data.
Qualifications:
- Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with a Middle School Language Arts endorsement (required).
- Demonstrated expertise in teaching the writing process and foundational grammar.
- Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-teaching environment.
- Previous experience teaching middle-level learners or ELA-specific curricula is preferred.
Evaluation: Annually by the District Principal or Associate Principal
Work Year: 180 contractual days (see Collective Bargaining Agreement)
Salary: Per Collective Bargaining Agreement
