This is investigative and protective services work in maintaining security and enforcing state and federal laws on U.S. Government property under control of the Maine Military Air National Guard Security Forces. Through specialized training, this work involves law enforcement and air base defense by patrolling, conducting investigations of alleged violations and complaints, apprehending and/or detaining suspects, issuing tickets, summonses, and performing other law enforcement duties as directed. Additionally, the position is responsible for base defense, security functions, and assistance to civilians and Maine Military Air National Guard Security Forces personnel. Work is performed under general supervision of the Maine Military Air National Guard.

Primary responsibilities include:
  • Provides force protection to military forces personnel and civilians while occupying the base to maintain the safety of the Air National Guard base.
  • Patrols military bases by conducting inspections and searches to meet security requirements on United States Government property under the control of the Maine Military Air National Guard forces.
  • Searches vehicles, buildings, and grounds for explosives, unusual boxes, and suitcases to apprehend and/or detain suspects.

  • Patrols in restricted areas provide an armed response in the protection of the United States and military priority resources to ensure the safety of Maine Air National Guard forces.
  • Patrols base roads, and parking areas, and issues motor vehicle traffic tickets for violations to ensure state and military rules and regulations are observed and enforced
  • Patrols airport and installation perimeter to ensure state laws and military rules and regulations are observed and enforced.
  • Detects, apprehends, and/or detains law and security violators to inform state, local police, and federal law enforcement agencies.
  • Performs weapons and equipment inventories, issues, and completes turn-in of weapons and equipment to maintain accountability of high dollar/sensitive assets.
  • Performs law enforcement desk, alarm monitor, dispatch, and video surveillance duties to ensure command, control, and communications for security operations.
Minimum qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent with no criminal or extensive motor vehicle record. Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire.

Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class):
1. Valid Maine Class C driver's license. Must have completed 100 hours of pre-service training provided by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy (MCJA). Must have completed 120 hours of in-service training based on curriculum approved by the MCJA Board of Directors. Must have current certification by MCJA as a Maine Law Enforcement Officer.
Or
2. Completion of Air Force Security Forces training at the 3P031 or higher level within the first (12) months of employment.
Or
3. Possess comparable Military Police certification in another branch of the U.S. Armed Services (direct conversion from a sister agency).

NOTE: Current certification by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy as a Maine Law Enforcement Officer will be considered to meet the above criteria for Minimum Qualifications and Licensing Registration/Certification requirements.
