ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
(This list is not intended to detail all aspects of the assigned work but is representative of the job’s overall responsibilities.)
- Work independently or as a team to disassemble, diagnose, write up/submit condition found, repair, reassemble, test and reinstall equipment such as pumps, valves and gearboxes in the Mechanic Shop and in the field.
- This employee needs to have a good technical understanding and ability to troubleshoot in at least three of the following areas of knowledge such as Repair and Overhaul, Machining, Mechanical Assembly, Fabrication, Hydraulics, Pneumatics, and Power Transmission Systems. This also includes Shop Math (e.g. weight calcs, trig, speeds and feeds, thermal growth using expansion coefficients, machine fits and allowances) and being able to read and comprehend blueprints, assembly drawings, technical manuals, and read other fabrication materials.
- Can competently run a hand full of equipment in the Machine Shop and Mechanic Shop. This includes but is not limited to manual mills and lathes, CNC mills and lathes, dynamic balancer, water jet, sand blaster, welders, drill press, band saw, hydraulic press, Cooper heat, hydrostatic test station, Climax portable boring bar, surface grinders and others as necessary.
- Has basic understanding of GD&T and how to apply it. Can thoroughly read shop drawings and inspect parts as needed and is able to take critical measurements.
- Preferred ability to machine parts to print or sample within budget using shop equipment in a fast-paced environment. Has ability to set up and run complex jobs with little or no supervision.
- Preferred working knowledge of speeds and feeds, tools/insert identification, appropriate use of cutting tools. Completely capable of establishing own speeds/feeds, depths of cut and adjusting them accordingly to maximize throughput.
- Appropriate care and use of most shop measuring equipment. Can independently inspect parts to print using standard shop measuring tools such as: Micrometers inside, outside, and depth, Vernier scales, calipers, rulers and tape measures, indicators, protractors, and height gage.
- Knowledge of rigging and overhead crane operation, lifting device use and inspection and load calculations a plus. Need to be able to lift heavy objects, physically manipulate objects with tools as needed utilizing cranes and other equipment to complete tasks in your daily job duties as projects require.

- Working knowledge of shipboard machinery (i.e. valves and actuators, variety of pumps, gears and gear boxes, winches, heat exchangers, bearings and shafting, rudder systems, field machining) pertaining to machine shop repairs a plus.
- Be able to work in a team environment or independently as needed.
- Able to perform complex work with minimal direction needed. Can independently overcome most obstacles.
- Works with a purpose and is actively engaged in the work they are doing.
- Willing to work in all environments as needed.
- Ability to follow a problem to the source and solve the issue.
- Strong mechanical aptitude when it comes to troubleshooting and making things work.
- His/her work is consistently in tolerance, deburred, cleaned and free of defects of any nature when they leave this person's area.
- Regularly exceeds time expectations and is at or below budget.
- Has the ability to train/ mentor lower-level peers and is a positive role model to others.
- Understands that the job is not complete until the jobsite is cleaned up and the paperwork is complete.
- Always wears proper PPE. If they see a safety issue, they own it. They have a "clean as you go” mentality.
- Has a strong drive for continuous improvement and making the shop better.
TOOLS REQUIRED:
Has or is willing to get his/her own basic tools, including but not limited to wrenches, test indicator, travel indicator, calipers, edge finder, dead blow hammer, scientific calculator, 123 blocks, combination square, and machinist handbook.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 5 years of experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- The physical demands for this position require continual standing, walking and using fine motor skills for the operation of tools and machinery.
- Ability to lift, carry 60Lbs. May require some lifting or assistance with heavy equipment. Occasionally requires twisting, turning, bending, climbing, and walking over uneven surfaces.
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, kneel, twist, pull, push, grip, and climb.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- The work is performed inside a shop and outside in the elements.
- The work is performed around industrial equipment generating varying degrees of noise.
- Work may involve use of chemicals, coolants, greases, solvents, petroleum, vapors and fumes.
- Proper PPE will be provided as necessary.
