    Position Summary

    This role will play an active role in advancing community violence prevention and intervention strategies across Shelby County. This position is designed for a motivated individual with lived experience in communities impacted by violence who is passionate about creating safer, healthier neighborhoods. Working within the Joint Office, the Youth Intervention Specialist will provide insight, outreach, and leadership that strengthen community trust, inform program design, and support collaboration among residents, partners, and government agencies.

    Pay Grade: 41H

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Two (2) years of experience in a community affected by violence, either personally or through direct engagement; AND
    • High school diploma or possess a GED, OR
    • PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Serves as a bridge between community members, the Office of Violence Prevention (OVP), and government partners to ensure that programs are responsive to local needs and experiences.
    • Participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of community violence intervention (CVI) initiatives, events, and outreach activities.
    • Engages directly with youth, families, and community stakeholders to promote peacebuilding, conflict mediation, and positive alternatives to violence.
    • Contributes lived experience and community insight to inform policy discussions, resource allocation, and program improvement.
    • Assists in data collection, community surveys, and feedback sessions to help measure program effectiveness.
    • Represents the Joint Office at community meetings, advisory boards, and public events to elevate youth and resident perspectives.
    • Supports communications, storytelling, and social media outreach efforts to amplify CVI efforts and success stories.
    • Participates in training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities related to leadership, trauma-informed care, and violence prevention/intervention.
    • Performs other related duties as required or directed.

    Special Requirements

    • Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license or secure one by date of employment.
    • Must have access to an operable automobile and meet County requirements for automobile insurance upon date of employment.
    • Attendance at meetings and activities on weekends and/or after regular business hours.
    • Local and out-of-city travel.

    All employees hired after September 1, 1986, must be residents of Shelby County and shall continue to reside in the County as a condition of their employment. The residency requirement shall not apply to certain public safety/civil service employees. This means exemption from this policy is in effect for the following departments and positions: (1) Sheriff Deputy Patrol Officers, Deputy Jailers and Dispatchers, employed by the Sheriff Department, (2) Correction Officers employed by the Division of Corrections, (3) Firefighters, Paramedics and Dispatchers employed by the Shelby County Fire Department. The residency exemption for public safety/civil service employees does not include Appointed positions with Sheriff's Office, Division of Corrections or the Fire Department.
