Basic Function

This is a seasonal position, ranging from 10-32 hours per week with no benefits.

This position is responsible for leading a traveling spring and summer playground program at various park sites throughout Federal Way; must be able to work as a team with other assigned staff and also independently with little supervision. Will perform and oversee the daily operations and activities, which include leading organized games, arts & crafts, and special events. Develops positive, supportive relationships with participants, parents, the public and other department staff. Conducts oneself in a professional manner that represents the City well; be involved and engaged in program & activities with the participants; use promotional materials that promote the program and activities; responsible and tracking of equipment and supplies.

Will be responsible for driving a City Recreation van daily to pre-selected playground sites. The successful candidate must be available to begin work Monday-Thursdays early-June & be able to work the entire duration of the program through August (approximately 13-weeks). The position has a variable hour work schedule, up to 32 hours per week. Schedule is Monday through Thursday, some Fridays for planning, with hours approximately 8:30am-4:30pm.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set-up and tear down of program equipment and supplies.
  • Lead programs and activities.
  • Prepare information and promotional materials that promote the program and activities.
  • Work with youth between ages 4-12 in a positive manner.
  • Interact professionally with participants and other employees.
  • Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
  • Responsible for inventory and tracking of equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain records and preparing reports.
  • Follow/adhere to all city policies and procedures, and safety program regulations and requirements.
  • Work effectively as a team.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate programs as well as adapt to playground conditions and participants.
  • Physically set up and tear-down program equipment.
  • Represent the City in a positive and professional manner; use good judgment and be a good role model for youth.
  • Take initiative and possess strong work ethic.
  • Work cohesively with other team members.
  • Perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance.

Education and Experience

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • One-year of college course work in recreation, education or related field preferred.
  • One-year experience working with youth and leading youth activities and programs preferred.

Licenses, Certificates and Other Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification within 30 days.
  • Must successfully pass all phases of the pre-employment hiring process, including but not limited to, reference checks and a criminal background check.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Safety practices and procedures applicable to assigned work
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Effective communication both oral and in written

Environmental Conditions/Physical Effort:

  • Must be comfortable driving a large van to and from work site.
  • Work is primarily performed outside at local parks in varying weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift/carry at least 40lbs.
