Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited university.

  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of Orientation and Mobility (O&M) techniques, including white cane skills, street crossings, and use of public transportation.

  • Ability to instruct students in various environments and manage behavior effectively.

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Plan and provide specialized instruction and mobility training to students with impairments. Provide interventions to maximize the student's ability to access the educational curriculum and increase independent travel skills.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instruction and Training

  • Plan and provide direct and consultative services consistent with goals contained in students' Individual Education Plans (IEP) regarding mobility.
  • Evaluate student progress and make recommendations regarding the frequency and duration of O&M services.
  • Train students in safe, efficient, and independent travel within the school and community environments.
  • Conduct specialized assessments to determine eligibility for services.

Consultation

  • Present staff development for campus personnel regarding the needs of students with mobility impairments.
  • Conduct consultations with teachers, parents, and community agencies to assist with the selection and use of adaptive materials and environmental modifications.

Student Management

  • Create a safe and supportive learning environment appropriate for the maturity level and needs of students navigating with limited mobility.
  • Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

Program Management

  • Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to interpret assessment data and assist with appropriate placement and goal setting.
  • Maintain an inventory of specialized equipment and technology for assigned students.

Administration

  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required by the district, including Medicaid billing if applicable.
  • Comply with federal and state laws (IDEA), State Board of Education rules, and local board policies.
  • Follow district safety protocols, particularly when instructing students in community or high-traffic areas.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Successful completion of a clinical practicum or internship in orientation and mobility.

  • Experience working with students who have multiple disabilities is preferred.
