Our Engineering Research and Development department (ER&D) is a fast growing function within Tata Technologies Limited that is assembled to work on exciting projects globally for multiple customers. It comprises highly specialized engineers across Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Heavy Machinery.
The Role:
The Module Leader - Exterior will establish and lead the Exterior Programme Module Team, ensuring cross-functional input from design, engineering, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, homologation and supplier teams throughout the full product development cycle and into launch. You will provide technical leadership across all exterior commodity areas including bumper systems, bodyside, glazing, sill, underbody aerodynamic surfaces, exterior lighting integration, and exterior sealing and appearance. You will take an active role in launch readiness activity under the Agile in Launch approach.
Dimension of Function
Engineering, Research and Development (ER&D) is a growing function within Tata Technologies Limited assembled to deliver programmers and projects for global clients. This position takes full ownership of the Exterior Module from concept through to launch and post-launch support. Responsibilities include team leadership, technical authority, programme delivery, financial oversight, and active launch engagement. The role requires close collaboration with Vehicle Programme teams, design studios, manufacturing engineering, homologation, and Tier 1 exterior and lighting suppliers.
Area of Responsibility
- You will lead and coordinate the Exterior Module Team, ensuring robust engineering delivery across all exterior commodities from programme start through to launch and early life support.
- Core responsibilities include: Owning the integrated exterior module plan covering design release, virtual validation, DVP&R, tooling readiness, build events and launch readiness gates.
- Leading the engineering development of exterior systems to deliver styling intent, aerodynamic targets, NVH sealing, durability, safety, homologation and cost objectives.
- Applying DFMEA, DFA, DFM, Robustness, Campaign Prevention and Concurrent Engineering disciplines across all exterior commodities.
- Developing System and Component Design Specifications and Statements of Work for exterior suppliers. Managing Tier 1 exterior supplier delivery through APQP including tooling, part maturity, validation sign-off and production readiness.
- Leading resolution of exterior AIMS entries, panel findings and attribute arbitration at programme reviews.
- Maintaining financial governance of the exterior module, tracking cost versus target and managing risk and opportunity.
- Representing the Exterior Module at programme reviews, gateway meetings, virtual series CAD reviews and customer-facing engineering forums. Supporting design studio interface to protect styling intent through feasibility, DFM and tolerance analysis.
- Actively supporting launch under the Agile in Launch framework: contributing to sprint reviews, issue backlog management and rapid response to exterior build quality findings.
- Ensuring exterior commodities are signed off at End of Line and supporting preparation for executive drives where exterior appearance quality is in scope. Driving a high-performance engineering culture across the module team focused on quality, pace and delivery accountability.
Knowledge / Experience
- Significant experience in automotive exterior engineering across bumper systems, closures adjacencies, glazing, body panels or exterior sealing and trim.
- Proven track record of module or senior lead engineer delivery on a vehicle programme from concept through production launch.
- Strong knowledge of exterior DTC processes, aerodynamic targets, DVP&R, FMEA, homologation interfaces, APQP and programme gateway management.
- Experience managing Tier 1 exterior or glazing suppliers through tooling, validation and launch milestones.
- Degree educated in Mechanical, Automotive or Design Engineering or equivalent experience. Proficiency with CATIA, 3DX, Teamcenter or equivalent PLM tools. Ability to manage cross-functional teams and resolve complex engineering issues under programme pressure.
- Desirable: Experience in Agile in Launch methodologies including sprint-based issue resolution and backlog prioritisation within a live launch environment. Track record of supporting exterior appearance quality sign-off for executive drives and end-of-line vehicle acceptance.
