Responsibilities:

In this role the Monitor Technician/Epilepsy Monitoring (EMU) will perform the following job duties:

  • Continuously monitor cardiac telemetry and EKG rhythms for assigned patients.
  • Recognize and identifies cardiac dysrhythmias and other significant rhythm changes.
  • Immediately notifies the registered nurse (RN) of pertinent changes in a patient's heart rate or cardiac rhythm.
  • Produce and maintain accurate telemetry rhythm strips for patient documentation.
  • Inventory, troubleshoot, and maintain telemetry monitoring equipment, including the central monitor bank and bedside patient units.
  • Continuously observe patients undergoing Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) testing for seizure activity.
  • Recognize and differentiates various types of seizure activity and documents findings accurately.
  • Promptly notifies the RN of observed seizure activity or other significant patient events.
  • Ensures EMU monitoring equipment is maintained, functional, and properly stocked within patient rooms.
  • Supports continuous patient monitoring by maintaining accurate documentation and ensuring monitoring systems operate effectively.

FTE: .90

Hours: 7:00am-7:00pm

Days: Variable

Qualifications:

Education

Required: GED or High School Diploma

Preferred: PCA, Medic Corpsman, or a nursing student having completed the first clinical rotation successfully

Necessary Skills

  • Basic medical terminology
  • Knowledge of standard precautions, recognizing obvious job related emergencies
  • An awareness of ethical and legal responsibilities as they relate to the job
  • Ability to read EKG arrhythmias
  • Demonstrates the essential knowledge necessary to effectively monitor patients for seizure activity connected to an Epilepsy Monitor (EMU)

Licensure/Certifications/Training

Required: Must successfully complete an EKG/Dysrhythmia course within 90 days of hire and within 6 months of hire, must attend unit-based courses relative to specialized area.

Experience

Required: Less than one year of related experience

Preferred: One year or more working in a healthcare environment as a monitor technician
