Schedule: Must be available between the hours of 5:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Essential Functions:

Performs duties as assigned to ensure that eligible county residents are picked up and transported to their destination in a safe, reliable, and courteous manner. This may include providing courteous assistance to elderly and/or residents with disabilities. The driver will need to work with transporting residents in all weather conditions. Maintain the digital manifest, which includes recording passenger pick-up/drop-off times, tracking mileage, and recording any no-show passengers. Will also maintain a written daily vehicle inspection/safety check details. Ensure that passengers requiring assistance at home or at a destination are met by staff or family members. When staff or family are not present, notify the office and wait for direction on what action to take in the individual situation. Follows all safety instructions per the direction of the Para-Transit Manager, Community Transit Supervisor, Transportation Coordinator, Director, Dispatcher, or an Administrative staff member. Follows the routed described on the vehicle manifest and alerts dispatch when the route is being delayed due to roadway issues or when there are significant delays in keeping to the assigned schedule.

Ambulate/walk on even and uneven surfaces, including stairs/steps, in all weather conditions. Deliver hot and cold meals, when required by the Community Transit Supervisor or management staff, to eligible persons and ensure that emergency procedures are followed if the client does not respond to the meal delivery. Check the message center for any additions, changes, or information about the individuals daily schedule.

This position is under Federal Transit Administration guidelines (Title 49 CFR parts 653, 654, 655) and is classified as "Safety Sensitive" and is subject to Drug & Alcohol regulations (Title 49 CFR part 40) and testing. Performs additional duties as assigned by the Community Transit Supervisor, Para-Transit Manager, Transportation Coordinator, Transportation Director, or the Director of Public Works.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Possession and retention of a valid New Jersey class "A" or "B" commercial drivers license (NJSA 39:5B-32, FMCSR Title 49 CFR 390-397) with a passenger endorsement with air brake restriction removed.
  • Retention of a valid Federal Motor Carrier/NJ MVC approved Medical Examiner Certificate (NJAC 13:21-14.5c6).
  • Completion and passing of the Community Transportation Associations Passenger Assistance Safety & Sensitivity (PASS) course and the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission approved Defensive Driving Course (DDC).
  • Ability to retain certification.
  • Experience in this area is desirable.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with the geographic makeup and/or municipalities of the County.
  • Bilingual ability to speak Spanish/English.

Environmental Conditions/Demands:

  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions - 100% of the time.
  • The position performs in varying temperatures from extreme heat to extreme cold.
  • The incumbent may be exposed to bodily fluids.
  • Bodily fluid clean-up kits and training are provided.
  • Work hazards encountered are traffic and mechanical (wheelchair lifts and securements systems).
  • The incumbent may work on different terrain, including slippery, sloping, unstable, and uneven.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to push and pull up to 64 pounds.
  • Able to lift and carry: Lift up to 50 pounds occasionally carry up to 37 pounds occasionally lift up to 20 pounds frequently.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 40 nutritional meals.
  • To safely and efficiently perform all required duties, the Motor Coach Operator must be able to occasionally lift loads of up to 50 pounds in weight and 44 inches in height onto shelving units, manipulate wheelchair with occupants up/down ramps (up to 64 pounds), and fasten wheelchair with occupants to the floor (below knee level).
  • Manual operation of wheelchair lift may be required (downward vertical push up to 47 pounds).
