MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS : The work involves responsibility for the operation of motor equipment and the performance of manual work normally associated with highway construction and maintenance. The work is carried ou t in accordance with established procedures and involves the safe and economical operation of equipment normally related to highway construction and maintenance, although an incumbent may be assigned to another department. The class differs from that of a Construction Equipment Operator I and Construction Equipment Operator II by virtue of the fact that a Motor Equipment Operator does not normally operate construction equipment. Depending on assignment, work is performed under the direct or general supervi sion of a higher level employee. Supervision of others is not normally a function of the class. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES : The typical work activities listed below, while providing representative examples of the variety of w ork assignments in the title do not describe any individual position. Incumbents in this title may perform some or all of the following, as well as other related activities not described. Operates all vehicles as defined under the New York State CLASS B CDL Driver's License, which includes but not limited to, the operation of a dump truck or pickup truck in connection with snowplowing, the removal of snow, debris and refuse and in the transportation of sand, stone, asphalt, gravel, and other construction or demolition materials and/or supplies including water and fuel; Performs manual labor such as loading and unloading trucks, digging ditches, cleaning basins and erecting signs and fences; Maintains cleanliness of assigned vehicles; Prepares all activi ty logs and other reports as required; May perform all duties of a Laborer; May operate an air compressor in the breaking of pavement and a chain saw in clearing brush and trimming trees; May operate a front end loader; May train on, and infrequently o perate, other types of construction equipment. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS : Good knowledge of the operation of trucks and other automotive equipment; good knowledge of the geography of the area; ability to u nderstand and follow simple oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; mechanical aptitude; willingness to respond to emergencies; willingness to work under adverse weather conditions; dependability; physical condition commensura te with the demands of the position. Motor Equipment Operator Page 2 Special Requirement : At time of appointment, must possess a valid New York State Driver's License appropriate for the vehicle and/or equipment being operated. Special Requirement for Positions in Ulster County Department of Public Works : Candidates for employment in this position must possess a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with required endorsements, if any , at time of appointment. New Y ork State Class B CDL Driver License Vehicle Description: Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 lbs. Class B may tow vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 10,000 lbs. or less, or may tow a vehicle of more than 10,000 lbs. providing the Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) is not more than 26,000 lbs. Fuel Truck operation may need other requirements (X endorsement). This is not required unless assigned to the operation of a Fuel Truck. Special Note : In accordance wit h Federal Highway Administration (HWA) 49CFR382, all prospective employees will undergo drug/alcohol testing prior to appointment and will undergo random drug/alcohol testing during the course of employment.
