    Motorcycle Technician

    Position Type: Full-Time
    Experience Level: Intermediate to Experienced
    Department: Service
Reports To: Service Manager / Management

    Position Summary

The Motorcycle Technician is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of motorcycles in accordance with manufacturer specifications, accepted industry practices, and shop procedures.

This position is intended for an intermediate to experienced technician capable of performing routine service and mechanical repairs independently while possessing the knowledge and judgment necessary to identify additional concerns and determine when further diagnostic direction or technical assistance is required.

The technician is responsible not only for completing assigned repairs, but also for accurately documenting motorcycle condition, diagnostic findings, recommended repairs, work performed, and any additional concerns discovered during service.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities

    • Perform scheduled maintenance and general motorcycle service.

    • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, fuel, starting, charging, cooling, and drivability concerns.

    • Perform engine, drivetrain, clutch, transmission, suspension, steering, brake, wheel, tire, and chassis repairs.

    • Perform motorcycle inspections and identify safety, maintenance, and repair needs.

    • Verify customer concerns and assist in determining appropriate diagnostic and repair procedures.

    • Use manufacturer service information, specifications, wiring diagrams, diagnostic equipment, and technical resources when performing repairs.

    • Complete assigned work accurately and within reasonable industry labor times.

    • Perform test rides and operational checks when appropriate to verify concerns and completed repairs.

    • Identify additional repair or maintenance needs discovered during service and communicate findings before performing unauthorized work.

    • Maintain complete and accurate repair-order documentation, including diagnostic findings, measurements, test results, work performed, and recommendations.

    • Properly document pre-existing damage, unusual motorcycle condition, modifications, or other conditions relevant to the repair.

    • Maintain assigned tools, shop equipment, lifts, diagnostic equipment, and work areas in safe working condition.

    • Follow shop safety procedures and proper handling requirements for motorcycles, batteries, fuel, chemicals, oils, and other hazardous materials.

    • Protect customer motorcycles and property while vehicles are in the shop's care.

    • Communicate with service staff regarding repair progress, parts needs, additional findings, delays, or changes in the scope of work.

    • Assist other technicians and shop personnel when necessary to maintain workflow.

    • Perform other service-department duties reasonably related to the position.

    Required Qualifications

    • Previous professional motorcycle repair experience or equivalent demonstrated experience.

    • Working knowledge of modern motorcycle mechanical and electrical systems.

    • Ability to independently perform common maintenance and repair procedures.

    • Ability to diagnose common mechanical and electrical faults using appropriate testing procedures rather than relying solely on parts replacement.

    • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, technical specifications, wiring diagrams, and repair procedures.

    • Ability to safely operate motorcycles for movement, inspection, and test riding.

    • Ability to use standard motorcycle service tools, precision measuring equipment, and diagnostic equipment.

    • Ability to accurately document technical findings and completed work.

    • Ability to organize and manage multiple assigned repair orders.

    • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

    • Ability to provide and maintain the professional hand tools normally required to perform motorcycle service and repair.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Three or more years of professional motorcycle or powersports repair experience.

    • Experience servicing multiple motorcycle manufacturers.

    • Dealership or independent repair facility experience.

    • Manufacturer training or technical certifications.

    • Advanced electrical and diagnostic experience.

    • Engine and transmission repair experience.

    • Experience with modern fuel-injection, ABS, CAN-bus, and electronic control systems.

    Performance Expectations

The Motorcycle Technician is expected to produce safe, accurate, and complete repairs while maintaining reasonable productivity.

    Performance is evaluated based on:

    • Quality and accuracy of completed repairs

    • Productivity and efficiency

    • Diagnostic ability

    • Comeback and rework rate

    • Repair-order documentation

    • Proper identification and communication of additional findings

    • Care of customer motorcycles and property

    • Organization and cleanliness

    • Reliability and attendance

    • Communication and teamwork

    • Compliance with shop procedures and safety standards

Technicians are expected to recognize the limits of their experience and seek assistance when necessary, rather than proceeding with a repair or diagnosis without sufficient information.

    Physical Requirements

This position regularly requires the employee to:

    • Stand and work on their feet for extended periods.

    • Bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and work in confined positions around motorcycles.

    • Use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment throughout the workday.

    • Push, pull, maneuver, and stabilize motorcycles of various sizes.

    • Lift and carry motorcycle components, wheels, batteries, tools, and other equipment.

    • Safely perform work around moving equipment, chemicals, fuels, oils, batteries, heat, and other normal repair-shop hazards.

Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals as required by applicable law.

    Tools & Equipment

The technician is expected to maintain a suitable set of personal hand tools appropriate to their skill level and position.

Specialty tools, major shop equipment, lifts, manufacturer-specific equipment, and designated diagnostic equipment are provided by the employer as applicable.

    Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in an active motorcycle repair facility. The position involves regular exposure to noise, motorcycles and equipment in operation, oils, fuels, chemicals, exhaust, temperature changes, and other conditions normally associated with a professional motorcycle service environment.

This position requires consistent attendance, attention to detail, safe work practices, and the ability to work both independently and as part of the service department.
