MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER

Position type: Full time exempt Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:45 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. unless otherwise specified Reports to: Head of Middle School

Position Summary: The Middle School Science Teacher is a core area teacher who is responsible for teaching science curriculum to middle school students grades 5 & 6. In this role, you will plan and lead a dynamic exploration of Systems in Science with deep dives into Ecology, Oceanography, and Space Science. Responsibilities:

• Design and lead innovative hands-on science lessons appropriate for the needs and abilities of 5th and 6th grade gifted learners. • Create a classroom culture that promotes deep thinking and conceptual understanding, critical thinking, perseverance, and scientific inquiry. • Attend the 5th Grade Indiana Dunes Field Trip and the 6th grade Marine Biology field trip. • Plan and coordinate curriculum-related field trips or guest speakers when appropriate. • Use a variety of assignments and assessments to track progress and guide instruction. • Develop, update, and document science curriculum as needed. • Maintain communication with parents, faculty, staff, and students. • Lead a middle school advisory group. • Teach an elective. • Provide trimester report cards. • Participate in the end of year summative review with the Division Head. • Attend faculty, staff, and division meetings. • Strive for excellence and continued professional growth by obtaining the Gifted Endorsement and participating in relevant conferences and training opportunities throughout the year, all fully funded by Sycamore School. • Other duties as assigned by the Head of Middle School.

Qualifications & Requirements:

• Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university • Certification in Science Education preferred • An understanding of Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth and Space Sciences, and Engineering Technology & Application of Science • Familiarity with the Next Generation Science Standards • Ability to organize and implement labs safely • Ability to facilitate methods of looking at and talking about scientists and their work • Strong critical thinking skills • Demonstrated lead teaching experience • Understanding of and ability to differentiate curriculum, especially for young gifted students • Knowledge of the academic and emotional needs of gifted students is highly preferred • Capability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with Sycamore community
