About the Position
The Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) is recruiting a Mississippi Archaeology Survey (MAS) Archaeologist to serve in the Historic Preservation Division. In this role, the archaeologist will be responsible for surveying archaeological sites and creating documentation that supports the agencys mission to identify, register, protect, and share information about archaeological resources across Mississippi. The position also plays an active role in planning and carrying out public outreach initiatives and events, as well as processing archaeological collections by cataloging, cleaning, documenting, and rehousing materials in accordance with 36 CFR 79, as needed. This position is part of the Archaeology Section and reports to the Chief Archaeologist. The MAS Archaeologist will carry out the statewide survey program under the guidance of the Chief Archaeologist and MAS Manager, ensuring compliance with mandated HP/NPS requirements. Responsibilities include completing laboratory work on survey collections, preparing archaeological reports, and assisting with Section 106 archaeological assessments. The role also involves entering data into relevant databases, including HSMT and collections systems, and supporting collections staff with inventory and rehousing of NAGPRA collections when needed. In addition, the archaeologist will respond to public inquiries about archaeological resources in the state, including conducting site visits, participating in outreach efforts, and performing other duties as assigned.

Strong analytical thinking skills, possess a proven ability in technical writing, and can work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Preferred Qualifications
Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree and 2-4 years of experience. Agency preferred qualifications: This position typically requires a Bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university in archaeology, anthropology, history, or a closely related field, with a preference for archaeology or anthropology. Candidates should have completed an archaeological field school and possess two to four years of relevant experience, with at least one year of prior experience in archaeology preferred.
