Job Title: A-Level Technician

Department: Motors

Location: UGM Motors

Reports To: Service Manager

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The A-level technician can diagnose, repair and complete a project without any assistance or supervision. They will have several years of experience and advanced training needed to perform work independently. He/she has demonstrated mastery of all vehicle systems and has leadership, mentoring, communication, and customer service skills. May specialize in specific system(s) such as Electrical/Electronic, Powertrain, Engine/Transmission, etc. The expected flat-rate efficiency level is 120%+.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Key Result Area #1: Vehicle Repairs
  • Expert Diagnostics: Perform complex diagnostics on engine, transmission, electrical, and HVAC systems using advanced computerized equipment.
  • Complex Repairs: Execute major repairs including engine overhauls, transmission rebuilds, and electrical system troubleshooting.
  • Quality Control: Test drive vehicles and perform digital vehicle inspections (DVI) before and after services to ensure safety.
  • Test drive vehicles and document results for marketing purposes.
Key Result Area #2: Mentor/Customer Service
  • Mentorship: Guide B-Level and C-Level technicians and review their work to maintain shop quality standards.
  • Customer Communication: Explain complex technical issues to customers and service advisors clearly.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Computer literate with proficiency using Word, Excel, Outlook, Office 365, UKG HR; able to complete documents, reports, and accurate records.
  • Excellent communication skills including written, verbal and instructional.
  • Prove to be teachable and organized with the ability to manage multiple projects/tasks at once; able to listen and follow instructions.
  • Flexibility and punctuality to work variable shift times.
  • Valid driver's license - required.
  • Clean driving record and insurable by UGM driver safety program standards - required.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL FACTORS:

Occasionally = 1%-33%; Frequently = 34%-66%; Continuously = 67%-100%
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (20-50 lbs) and work in various positions - frequently.
  • Requires working indoors and outdoors - continuously.
    Requires climbing stairs, sitting, standing, bending, and reaching - continuously.
    Requires a sustained level of high energy, stamina, and the ability to move about all the facilities on a regular and ongoing basis - frequently.
    Requires the ability to hear, see, and speak clearly - continuously.
EQUIPMENT/TOOLS USED:
  • Equipment: Must own a comprehensive set of automotive hand tools.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • Education: High school diploma or GED; technical school degree preferred.
  • Active ASE Master Technician Certification: Must have passed all A1-A8 tests.
  • Experience: Generally, 5-10 years of professional automotive repair experience, typically including previous work as a B-Level & C-Level technician.
  • Substitution of education and over 5 years of professional experience may be considered in place of the ASE Master Certification.

TASKS A-Level Technician:
  • Disassembles and performs partial or complete overhaul of engines, transmissions, differentials, other assemblies and sub-assemblies.
  • Uses gauges, special tools, and specialized equipment to diagnose mechanical failure or problems (such as electronic diagnostic equipment, infrared machine for exhaust emissions, and air conditioning recharging machine).
  • Performs wheel alignments and balances wheels.
  • Installs and/or adjusts brakes, heaters and defrosters.
  • Replaces worn or broken parts.
  • Grinds valves.
  • Repairs automotive equipment (such as alternators, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, pumps, and carburetion systems).
  • Operates vehicles to diagnose problems and validate that repairs have been properly completed.
  • Shop equipment as necessary: Constructs, maintains or services equipment.
  • Repairs gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Serves as team leader/lead worker when assigned.
  • Repairs equipment and machinery as necessary.
  • Perform duties of previous level in series, as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
