An innovative engineering and propulsion technology organization is seeking a highly skilled CNC Prototype Machinist to support advanced product development and rapid prototyping efforts. This role is ideal for a hands-on machinist who thrives in an R&D environment where precision, creativity, and collaboration are critical to success.
The position focuses on machining complex prototype components, tooling, and test hardware used in the development of next-generation mechanical systems. Candidates should be comfortable working independently, solving machining challenges, and supporting fast-paced engineering programs from concept through testing.
Key Responsibilities
Program, set up, and operate CNC mills and lathes to manufacture high-precision prototype components
Perform complex machining operations with an emphasis on multi-axis milling and prototype development work
Utilize Haas and Fanuc controls to execute precision machining processes
Develop and optimize machining strategies, tooling, and CNC programs using CAM software such as MasterCam
Manufacture components from engineering drawings, CAD models, and technical sketches
Inspect finished parts to verify dimensional accuracy, tolerances, and overall quality standards
Operate manual machining equipment including Bridgeport mills, manual lathes, and surface grinders
Collaborate closely with engineers and technical teams to refine designs and improve manufacturability
Support rapid prototype builds, testing activities, and engineering change iterations
Assist with fixture development, tooling selection, and process improvements for low-volume prototype manufacturing
Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient machine shop environment
Required Qualifications
Strong CNC machining experience including setup, operation, and programming of mills and lathes
Experience with multi-axis machining operations preferred
Proficiency working with Haas and Fanuc control systems
Experience using MasterCam or similar CAM programming software
Hands-on experience operating manual machining equipment including mills, lathes, and grinders
Ability to read and interpret detailed mechanical drawings, blueprints, and GD&T specifications
Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, feeds/speeds, and precision measurement techniques
Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities within prototype or custom manufacturing environments
High attention to detail and commitment to producing quality precision components
Ability to work independently while supporting collaborative engineering and development teams
