Description

St Louis Countys Jefferson Barracks museums are seeking an enthusiastic Museum Educator to ensure a positive and welcoming experience for visitors and provide administrative, visitor services, and program support. This position builds experience in customer service, public speaking, and knowledge of and experience with military history and museums. Museum Educators facilitate interpretative services to Museum visitors through guided tours and during programs and events (i.e., family programs, exhibit openings), engage visitors in a welcoming manner and are responsive and informative to visitors needs. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, collaborative, energetic, customer oriented and possess a positive, friendly personality.

This is a part-time position with a predetermined schedule (monthly). Work schedule includes weekends and some evenings for special events. The average is 28 hours per week. The starting salary is $18.52 hourly and there are no benefits provided. Work schedule is Wednesday - Sunday 11:30am to 4:30pm with limited flexibility.

Examples of Duties

Examples of Duties:

  • Communicate with the public in a personable, professional and knowledgeable manner
  • Works with Volunteers on a daily basis
  • Works in a variety of historic buildings
  • Process tour inquiries, provide check-in information and communicate with teachers and volunteers
  • Keep daily attendance, collect and record visitor data; address visitor concerns in a resourceful and courteous manner and communicate visitor feedback to appropriate staff
  • Provide accurate information about the Museum, its exhibits, events and programs, as well as information on the surrounding area; attend pre-exhibition trainings
  • Assist in the set-up and/or assist visitors with a variety of audio visual and multimedia technologies that are used in exhibits (may include laptops and projectors, video cameras, and touch screen displays)
  • Assist as needed with special projects and Education and Visitor Services departmental assignments
  • Monitor building and exhibits to ensure safety of patrons and security of artifacts and exhibits while museum is open to the public; open and close buildings as scheduled
  • Perform related work as required

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors Degree in History, Museum Studies, Education or a related field and one year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Must be willing to work some weekends and evenings for special events and programs.

Employees hired for full time employment will participate in the St. Louis County retirement plan where they contribute 4% of their salary to the defined benefit plan with vesting after 7 years. Other benefits include: paid life insurance, a credit union, 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, pre-tax premium pay plan, dependent care and medical expense reimbursement plans, and short and long term disability insurance.

In addition to these benefits, as of January 1, 2023, St. Louis County approved up to 480 hours of paid parental leave for eligible employees welcoming new children, either by birth or adoption. The employee can also take up to 80 hours of leave for prenatal care and up to 80 hours for care of the child within the first year.
